Quick Facts: ABV: 15.6%  |  Origin: Howell Mountain, Napa Valley, California  |  Vintage: 2021  |  Winery: CADE Estate (PlumpJack Collection)

Production & Heritage

CADE Estate Winery is part of the PlumpJack Collection and operates from a LEED Gold Certified facility perched high on Howell Mountain. The 2021 Estate bottling is a blend of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Malbec, 5% Petit Verdot, and 1% Merlot, fermented with a deliberately short maceration of 5–7 days at hot temperatures peaking at 92°F, with must pressed off between 20° and 12° Brix. Following fermentation, the wine aged 19 months in 100% French oak barrels, 79% of which were new, lending structure and a polished oak framework without masking the mountain fruit character.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: The nose opens with ripe black cherry and dark plum before shifting into layers of cocoa nibs, roasted coffee, and dark chocolate. Subtle hints of pine, sage, and violet add aromatic complexity that reflects the elevated Howell Mountain terroir.

Taste: The entry is rich and succulent, with concentrated dark plum and boysenberry giving way to a mid-palate of mocha, cinnamon, and clove. A thread of rhubarb-like acidity and iron-tinged minerality keeps the medium-to-full body from feeling heavy, while leather and menthol add savory dimension through the peak.

Finish: The finish is long and mouth-filling, with lingering notes of baking spice, espresso, and a faint herbal quality reminiscent of bouquet garni. Tannins are firm but ripe, providing grip that suggests further development in the cellar.

How to Drink Cade Howell Mountain

This wine is best served at 60–65°F in a large-bowled glass with 30–60 minutes of decanting to open the tightly wound aromatics. Given its concentration and tannin structure, neat sipping is the primary serve, though it pairs exceptionally at the table. For cocktail-adjacent uses, consider a red wine reduction for culinary applications — the depth of fruit and spice makes it ideal for a Cabernet-based pan sauce with grilled meats.

Best For

  • Building a serious Napa Valley Cabernet cellar with aging potential
  • Gifting a wine collector who appreciates mountain-grown expressions
  • Anchoring a high-end dinner party centered on grilled red meat
  • Comparing Howell Mountain terroir against valley-floor Napa Cabernets

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Cade Howell Mountain taste like? Cade Howell Mountain 2021 leads with concentrated dark plum, mocha, and boysenberry, layered with cinnamon, clove, leather, and espresso notes. The texture is rich and mouth-filling with firm, ripe tannins and a long spice-driven finish.

How does Cade Howell Mountain compare to Dunn Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon? Both are benchmark Howell Mountain Cabernets, but they represent different stylistic approaches — Dunn, produced since 1979, is known for austere, long-aging wines with restrained oak influence. Cade's 2021, with 79% new French oak and a riper, more fruit-forward profile at 15.6% ABV, is more approachable in its youth while still carrying mountain tannin structure.

Is Cade Howell Mountain good for sipping neat? Yes, this is primarily a wine meant for the table or contemplative sipping, and its combination of concentration, acidity, and tannic structure rewards patient drinking after proper decanting.

Where is Cade Howell Mountain made? Cade Howell Mountain is produced at the CADE Estate Winery, a LEED Gold Certified facility located at approximately 1,800 feet elevation on Howell Mountain in the northeastern hills of Napa Valley, California.

What foods pair well with Cade Howell Mountain? Grilled ribeye steak complements the wine's tannin and dark fruit weight. Braised short ribs mirror its mocha and spice tones. Hard aged cheeses like aged Gouda or Parmigiano-Reggiano echo its savory undertones. Dark chocolate desserts harmonize with the cocoa and espresso notes. Herb-crusted lamb rack bridges the wine's herbal and meaty dimensions.

What sizes does Cade Howell Mountain come in? The standard release is available in a 750ml bottle.

Is Cade Howell Mountain worth the price? Cade Estate Howell Mountain positions as a premium Napa Valley mountain Cabernet, and its 94-point James Suckling score and 93-point Jeb Dunnuck rating place it competitively among estate-grown Howell Mountain wines in its tier.

Why Cade Howell Mountain?

What separates the 2021 Estate bottling is the intersection of high-elevation Howell Mountain fruit and a deliberately modern winemaking approach — the short, hot fermentation extracts color and primary fruit intensity without excessive tannin, while 19 months in predominantly new French oak adds structure and polish. The result, recognized with 94 points from James Suckling, is a wine that delivers mountain power without sacrificing drinkability. Produced at one of Napa's few LEED Gold Certified wineries, it also represents a commitment to sustainable production that is still uncommon at this quality level in the appellation.
