About Tropical & Melon

Every tropical liqueur on this shelf starts with a warm-climate fruit: passion fruit, banana, lychee, pineapple or sweet green melon. They are made by blending fruit extracts or juice with a neutral spirit or brandy, then sweetening. Alize Gold Passion, for example, blends passion fruit juice with French vodka, while crème de banane is a classic French style built on macerated bananas.

Most of these are made for mixing rather than slow sipping. The Midori Sour, with melon liqueur, fresh lemon and lime and a splash of soda, is the signature serve for Midori. For banana liqueur, try a Banana Daiquiri: aged rum, lime, and a half ounce of Giffard Banane du Bresil or Tempus Fugit Crème de Banane. Passion fruit liqueurs from Chinola or Passoa add tart, tropical depth to sours, spritzes and tiki drinks.

For a simple highball, pour Hpnotiq or Alize over ice and top with lemon-lime soda or sparkling wine. Lychee liqueurs such as Soho and Giffard Lichi Li pair well with gin and sparkling wine.

Tropical & Melon FAQ

What is tropical liqueur?

Tropical liqueur is any sweetened spirit flavored with fruit from warm climates, such as passion fruit, banana, lychee, pineapple or melon. Most are bottled for cocktails rather than sipping. Chinola Passion Fruit Liqueur, Giffard Banane Du Bresil and Soho Lychee Liqueur are three good examples of the range.

What is the best passion fruit liqueur?

It depends on the drink. Chinola Passion Fruit Liqueur leans tart and fresh, which suits sours and spritzes, while Passoa Passion Fruit Liqueur is a familiar choice for a passion fruit martini. Alize Gold Passion blends passion fruit with French vodka and is often served simply over ice.

What do you mix with Midori melon liqueur?

Midori Melon pairs easily with citrus, so the classic Midori Sour simply adds fresh lemon and lime juice and a splash of soda. It also mixes well with pineapple juice, coconut rum or sparkling wine. Keep the pour around one to one and a half ounces, since melon liqueur is quite sweet.

What is crème de banane used for?

Crème de banane is a banana liqueur used in tiki drinks, the Banana Daiquiri and dessert cocktails. Tempus Fugit Creme De Banane and Giffard Banane Du Bresil both carry a ripe, rounded banana flavor, so a half ounce is usually enough to taste the fruit without overwhelming the rum or citrus in the glass.
