About Triple Sec & Curacao

Triple sec and curacao are the workhorse orange liqueurs of the cocktail bar, and this page covers both, from well-known labels to bar staples in liter bottles.

Producers soak dried orange peels, often bitter and sweet oranges together, in spirit, then distill or filter the result and sweeten it. Triple sec is usually clear and crisp; the origin of the name is debated. Curacao takes its name from the Caribbean island of Curacao, home of the bitter laraha orange, and many bottles carry an amber tint. Some modern curacaos use a brandy base, such as Pierre Ferrand Dry Curacao from Ferrand, which is noticeably less sweet.

Brands worth knowing include Cointreau, the French reference point for the style, Combier Liqueur d'Orange, Luxardo Triplum from Italy, and Hiram Walker for everyday mixing. Patron Citronge Orange & Jalapeno adds heat to a spicy margarita.

Two drinks show the range. A Cosmopolitan shakes vodka, triple sec, cranberry and lime. A Mai Tai calls for aged rum, orange curacao, orgeat and lime. Use about half an ounce to three quarters of an ounce per drink and adjust for sweetness. Cognac-based blends and other citrus styles sit one level up in Orange & Citrus Liqueurs.

Triple Sec & Curacao FAQ

What is triple sec?

Triple sec is a clear orange liqueur made by steeping dried orange peels in spirit, then distilling and sweetening it. It is a key ingredient in the Margarita, Cosmopolitan and Long Island Iced Tea. Bottles range from bright, premium versions like Luxardo Triplum Triple Sec to sweeter bar staples such as Dekuyper Triple Sec.

Is Cointreau a triple sec?

Yes. Cointreau is a triple sec, made in France from sweet and bitter orange peels and a neutral base. It tends to taste drier and more aromatic than many lower-cost triple secs. That is why recipes often name Cointreau specifically, though Combier Liqueur D'Orange is a comparable clear orange liqueur.

What is the difference between triple sec and curacao?

Triple sec is usually clear and crisp, while curacao is often amber and slightly richer, traditionally linked to the bitter laraha orange of Curacao. The two can be swapped in most recipes. Marie Brizard Orange Curacao suits a Mai Tai, and Pierre Ferrand Dry Curacao offers a less sweet, brandy-based take.

What can I use instead of triple sec in a margarita?

Any clear orange liqueur will work. Cointreau is the most common upgrade, and Patron Citronge Orange pairs naturally with tequila. A dry curacao such as Pierre Ferrand Dry Curacao adds more depth. Start with the same measure your recipe calls for, taste, and adjust lime or agave to balance the sweetness.
