Tokaji

(4 products)

Tokaji is Hungary's legendary sweet wine, made in the Tokaj region from Furmint, Hárslevelű and other local grapes. Its sweetness comes from botrytis, the noble rot that shrivels grapes on the vine and concentrates their sugar and acidity, so Tokaji is naturally sweet rather than fortified. Expect honey, apricot, orange peel and a bright acidity that keeps even the richest bottles fresh.

Styles to know:

  • Aszú (Puttonyos): The classic. Wines labeled 3 to 6 Puttonyos indicate how much botrytized fruit went in, with higher numbers meaning richer, sweeter wine.
  • Szamorodni: Made from whole bunches that include some botrytized grapes. Sweet versions are lighter and more approachable than Aszú.

Serve slightly chilled with blue cheese, foie gras or fruit desserts, or on its own after dinner. Tokaji sits within our broader Dessert Wines category.
