Quick Facts: ABV: 40%  |  Origin: Highlands of Jalisco, Mexico  |  Aged Up to 24 Months  |  Distillery: NOM 1547, Integradora San Agustin, Tototlán

Production & Heritage

Tromba is the passion project of Marco Cedano and his son Rodrigo, who founded the brand to showcase highland agave character with minimal interference. Blue Weber agave plants, matured seven to twelve years at elevations above 5,200 feet in the Los Altos region, are slow-cooked in traditional stone and brick ovens before roller mill extraction. The juice ferments in stainless steel tanks and undergoes double distillation in copper pot stills at their facility in Tototlán, Jalisco (NOM 1547). For the añejo expression, the distillate rests in ex-Jack Daniel's American white oak barrels for up to 24 months. Rather than following a fixed aging schedule, Marco and Rodrigo taste the barrels monthly and bottle only when both agree the spirit has reached its peak — a hands-on approach that keeps agave flavor at the forefront rather than letting oak dominate.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Vanilla taffy and butterscotch lead the nose, followed by scented tobacco and light smoke. A layer of rice pudding sweetness emerges beneath, with hints of cooked agave grounding the bouquet.

Taste: The entry is soft with caramel and cacao, building into caramelized agave and baking spices at the mid-palate. Tropical fruit notes — pineapple especially — weave through alongside dried cherry and a distinct earthiness that reflects the highland terroir. Dried pepper adds quiet warmth toward the peak.

Finish: Medium in length with a smooth, lightly smoky vanilla fade and lingering notes of green wood sap and dried fruit. The agave character remains present through the close, never fully eclipsed by the barrel influence.

How to Drink Tromba Añejo

Sipping neat or with a single ice cube best reveals the interplay between barrel sweetness and highland agave. A few drops of water open up the tropical fruit notes without diluting the caramel core. For cocktails, the añejo's richness works well in an Old Fashioned, where its cacao and baking spice notes replace bourbon's corn sweetness naturally; in a Tequila Manhattan, the dried cherry and vanilla stand up to sweet vermouth; and in a Oaxacan-style Negroni riff, the light smoke and earthy agave add complexity against Campari's bitterness.

Best For

  • Gifting a tequila enthusiast who values craft distilling heritage
  • After-dinner sipping alongside dark chocolate or dessert
  • Introducing bourbon drinkers to aged tequila via the Jack Daniel's barrel connection
  • Building a tequila collection that prioritizes agave-forward aged expressions

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Tromba Añejo taste like? Tromba Añejo delivers caramel, cacao, and caramelized agave upfront, with baking spices, dried cherry, and tropical pineapple notes developing through the mid-palate. A light smokiness and earthy dried pepper linger on a medium finish.

How does Tromba Añejo compare to Don Julio Añejo? Both share a connection through master distiller Marco Cedano, who originally created Don Julio before launching Tromba. Tromba Añejo tends to be more agave-forward and less oak-heavy than Don Julio Añejo, partly due to the monthly tasting regimen that determines when each batch is bottled rather than adhering to a fixed aging timeline.

Is Tromba Añejo good for sipping neat? Yes — the 40% ABV and up to 24 months of barrel aging produce a smooth, balanced spirit with enough complexity to reward slow sipping without being overly aggressive on the palate.

Where is Tromba Añejo made? Tromba Añejo is produced at Integradora San Agustin (NOM 1547) in Tototlán, located in the Highlands (Los Altos) of Jalisco, Mexico. The Blue Weber agave is grown at elevations above 5,200 feet in the same highland region.

What foods pair well with Tromba Añejo? Dark chocolate truffles complement the cacao and caramel notes. Grilled pork with a mole sauce mirrors the baking spice and dried pepper character. Aged Manchego cheese pairs with the butterscotch sweetness. Flan or crème brûlée echoes the vanilla and caramelized sugar elements. Smoked almonds pick up the light smoky finish.

What sizes does Tromba Añejo come in? The standard size is 750ml, which is the most widely available format for this expression.

Is Tromba Añejo worth the price? Tromba Añejo positions as a mid-premium añejo tequila, competing with well-known highland expressions at a similar tier. The pedigree of its master distiller, the 100% blue agave highland sourcing, and the hands-on barrel monitoring process offer strong value relative to comparably aged competitors.

Why Tromba Añejo?

The defining edge here is Marco Cedano's direct involvement. As the man who originally built Don Julio's reputation, his decision to launch Tromba as a smaller, more agave-centric brand gives this añejo a lineage few competitors can match. The practice of tasting barrels monthly and bottling only by consensus between father and son — rather than at a predetermined age — means each release reflects flavor readiness over calendar convenience. Aging in ex-Jack Daniel's American white oak adds a familiar caramel-vanilla backbone that appeals to both tequila purists and whiskey crossover drinkers, while the highland terroir keeps the agave character front and center. With a 92-point score from WineAlign and a production philosophy rooted in patience over volume, Tromba Añejo earns its place among serious agave spirits.
