Quick Facts: ABV: 40% (80 Proof)  |  Origin: Los Altos (Highlands), Jalisco, Mexico  |  Aged Minimum 2.5 Years  |  Distillery: Tequila Don Julio, S.A. de C.V.

Production & Heritage

The La Primavera distillery was founded in 1942 in the highlands of Jalisco, at roughly 5,200 feet above sea level in Atotonilco El Alto. Don Julio 1942 is made from hand-selected, 100% Blue Weber agave grown in the region's rich volcanic clay soils, slow-cooked in traditional masonry ovens for 70 hours to develop deep caramelized sugars. The cooked agave juice undergoes fermentation with a proprietary yeast strain before being double-distilled in alembic pot stills and aged for a minimum of two and a half years in reclaimed American white oak barrels. The result is produced in deliberately small batches, distinguishing it from the distillery's standard Añejo, which carries a shorter aging period.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Toasted oak and rich caramel lead, followed by layers of vanilla, roasted agave, and a subtle hint of cocoa. The nose is inviting and complex without being overpowering.

Taste: The entry is silky and sweet, with butterscotch and baked agave coating the palate. At mid-palate, warm cinnamon spice and oak richness emerge, giving way to tropical fruit notes that recall the Wine Enthusiast description of Sauternes-like sweetness. The mouthfeel is notably viscous for a 40% ABV spirit.

Finish: Long and smooth, with lingering vanilla, toasted oak, and a faint whisper of smoke. The warmth fades gradually, leaving a clean, slightly sweet impression that invites the next sip.

How to Drink Don Julio 1942

Given the complexity developed over its extended aging, Don Julio 1942 is best appreciated neat in a snifter or Riedel tequila glass, at room temperature or with a single large ice cube to gently open the aromatics. That said, its richness works beautifully in elevated cocktails:

  • Old Fashioned (Tequila variation): The caramel and oak character harmonizes naturally with Demerara syrup and Angostura bitters, creating a seamless riff on the classic.
  • Añejo Sidecar: The butterscotch and tropical fruit notes complement Cointreau and fresh lemon, adding depth beyond what a standard tequila brings.
  • Smoking Bishop: Paired with mezcal, agave nectar, and citrus, the 1942's vanilla sweetness balances smoky intensity without losing its identity.

Best For

  • Gifting a tequila enthusiast who appreciates aged, sipping-quality expressions
  • Splitting between two guests or occasions without committing to a full 750ml bottle
  • Building a premium home bar focused on highland Jalisco tequilas
  • Celebratory toasts — milestone birthdays, promotions, or New Year's Eve

Both target the luxury añejo segment with extended aging and highland agave, but Don Julio 1942 leans into a sweeter, more caramel-forward profile, while Patrón El Alto incorporates a blend of aging in different barrel types for added complexity. Don Julio 1942 holds a 95-point Wine Enthusiast score, giving it a slight edge in documented critical acclaim.

Why Don Julio 1942?

Few añejo tequilas carry both the critical recognition and the production pedigree that Don Julio 1942 does. The 70-hour slow cook in masonry ovens is notably longer than most commercial tequila producers employ, yielding deeper caramelization of the agave sugars before distillation even begins. A 95-point score from Wine Enthusiast and consecutive Gold medals at the International Spirits Challenge speak to remarkable consistency across batches. The two-pack format makes this expression practical for sharing or sampling without sacrificing the full Don Julio 1942 experience.
