Quick Facts: ABV: 55% | Origin: Isle of Arran, Scotland (Lowlands) | No Age Statement | Distillery: Lagg Distillery
Production & Heritage
Lagg Distillery sits on the southern coast of the Isle of Arran, established as a sister operation to the island's original Arran Distillery under Isle of Arran Distillers. The Corriecravie expression uses Concerto malted barley peated to 50ppm in the kiln and water drawn from the distillery's own borehole, then double distilled in copper pot stills. After initial maturation in bourbon barrels, the whisky spends six months finishing in Oloroso sherry hogsheads sourced directly from the house of Miguel Martin in Jerez, Spain, and is bottled without chill filtration and with no added colour.
Tasting Notes
Aroma: Fresh menthol and earthy dried hay open the nose before giving way to dark chocolate, spiced red berries, and old-fashioned cola. Beneath those layers sit coastal mineral notes, subtle clove, nutmeg, and a whisper of elderflower alongside vegetal peat smoke.
Taste: The palate arrives rich and mouthwatering, with smoky charred embers meeting milk chocolate and hazelnut at the entry. Mid-palate, redcurrant sweetness and kirsch-like fruit weave through iodine-tinged peat, balanced by polished oak and sweet spice. At cask strength, the 55% ABV carries substantial weight without overwhelming the sherry-derived fruit character.
Finish: Long and warming, with charred oak, lingering dark chocolate, and hazelnut persisting alongside gentle smoke and sweet baking spice. A faint rubberiness and coastal salinity trail off slowly, keeping the peat present but never dominant.
How to Drink Lagg Corriecravie
At 55% ABV and non-chill filtered, Corriecravie rewards neat sipping but opens considerably with a few drops of water, which tames the peat and amplifies the sherry-fruit sweetness. Its bold profile also works in cocktails: try it in a Penicillin, where the heavy peat and chocolate notes replace the traditional smoky float with full-bodied depth; in a Rob Roy, where its sherry-cask sweetness and smoke complement sweet vermouth; or in a Blood and Sand, where the red berry and kirsch character harmonizes with cherry liqueur and orange juice.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does Lagg Corriecravie taste like? Lagg Corriecravie delivers a rich combination of dark chocolate, charred embers, hazelnut, and red berry fruit layered over 50ppm peat smoke. The Oloroso sherry finish adds sweet spice and a kirsch-like fruitiness that balances the smokiness.
How does Lagg Corriecravie compare to Arran Machrie Moor? Both are peated expressions from Isle of Arran Distillers, but Corriecravie is peated significantly higher at 50ppm versus Machrie Moor's approximately 20ppm and is bottled at a higher 55% ABV. With Machrie Moor being phased out, Lagg Corriecravie represents the group's new direction for heavily peated single malt.
Is Lagg Corriecravie good for sipping neat? Yes — the cask-strength 55% ABV and non-chill-filtered presentation make it an excellent neat sipper, though a splash of water helps unlock the sherry-derived fruit and softens the peat intensity.
Where is Lagg Corriecravie made? Lagg Corriecravie is produced at Lagg Distillery on the southern tip of the Isle of Arran, off Scotland's west coast. Though located on an island, the distillery falls within the Lowlands whisky region under Scotch Whisky Association classification.
What foods pair well with Lagg Corriecravie? Dark chocolate truffles echo the malt's cocoa notes; smoked salmon or smoked duck complement the heavy peat; aged Manchego mirrors the Oloroso sherry influence; grilled lamb chops stand up to the whisky's bold, smoky weight; and dried fruit and nut platters highlight the hazelnut and redcurrant character.
What sizes does Lagg Corriecravie come in? The standard release is a 700ml bottle, which is the primary format available for this expression.
Is Lagg Corriecravie worth the price? Corriecravie positions as a premium expression within the young Lagg range, and the cask-strength ABV, non-chill-filtered bottling, and named sherry cask provenance from Miguel Martin offer strong value compared to similarly peated, sherry-finished malts at this strength.
Why Lagg Corriecravie?
Corriecravie stands out for its unusually high 50ppm peat level combined with a dedicated Oloroso sherry hogshead finish from a single, named producer — a level of cask transparency uncommon in NAS releases. The non-chill-filtered, natural-colour bottling at 55% ABV delivers the whisky as close to barrel character as possible. Silver medals at both the International Wine & Spirit Competition and the World Whiskies Awards confirm the quality is holding up to international scrutiny even as Lagg Distillery remains in its early years. For drinkers who want serious island peat with genuine sherry-cask depth, Corriecravie fills a distinctive space that the soon-to-be-retired Machrie Moor leaves behind.
