Description

Compass Box Artist's Blend 750ML is a non-chill-filtered blended Scotch whisky bottled at 43% ABV (86 proof) in a 750ml bottle. What distinguishes this blend from the crowded Scotch landscape is its unusually high malt content — roughly 55% single malts — and its use of new French oak alongside traditional cask types, a technique virtually no other blended Scotch employs.

Quick Facts: ABV: 43%  |  Origin: Scotland  |  Blended Scotch Whisky (NAS)  |  Producer: Compass Box Whisky Company

Production & Heritage

Compass Box was founded in London in 2000 by John Glaser, a former Johnnie Walker marketing director who set out to challenge conventions in Scotch blending. Artist's Blend draws its malt component from three distilleries — Clynelish in the Highlands, and Linkwood and Balmenach from Speyside — along with a pocket of Highland blended malt. The grain whisky comes from Cameronbridge, matured in first-fill ex-bourbon American oak barrels. What separates Artist's Blend from typical blends is the cask strategy: first-fill American oak, first-fill European oak ex-sherry butts, and new heavily toasted French oak all contribute to the final vatting. The whisky is bottled at natural colour with no chill filtration, preserving its full body and texture.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Vanilla and floral notes arrive first, followed by mandarin orange and cardamom. Beneath those brighter elements sits a layer of salted caramel and baking spices that reveals itself with time in the glass.

Taste: The entry is soft and sweet, led by baked apple and butterscotch. Mid-palate, vanilla deepens into luxurious caramel, while rhubarb-and-custard sweetness and lemon sherbet add brightness. Toasted oak and gentle spice build toward the peak, giving the blend more structure than its gentle entry might suggest.

Finish: Medium to long, with a creamy texture that carries vanilla and toffee apple into a warm, spiced fade. A whisper of toasted French oak lingers alongside a faint citrus note.

How to Drink Artist's Blend

Artist's Blend rewards neat drinking at room temperature; a few drops of water open up the floral and citrus aromatics without thinning the creamy mouthfeel. It also holds up well on the rocks, where the caramel and butterscotch notes become more pronounced. In a Penicillin, the blend's baked apple and spice complement the honey-ginger syrup without being overwhelmed by the smoky float. A Rob Roy benefits from the whisky's natural sweetness and vanilla backbone, keeping the cocktail balanced and silky. For a lighter serve, an Artist's Highball with quality soda water and a lemon twist highlights the blend's floral and citrus character.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Artist's Blend taste like? Artist's Blend leads with baked apple, vanilla, and butterscotch, layered over toasted oak and gentle baking spices. The mouthfeel is notably creamy for a blended Scotch, with a medium-long finish that carries caramel and citrus notes.

How does Artist's Blend compare to Johnnie Walker Black Label? Both are blended Scotch whiskies at similar price points, but Artist's Blend contains a significantly higher percentage of malt whisky (roughly 55% versus the industry norm of 30–40%). Reviewers consistently note that Artist's Blend delivers a bolder, more pronounced flavor profile where Johnnie Walker Black is gentler and more muted by comparison.

Is Artist's Blend good for sipping neat? Yes — the non-chill-filtered bottling at 43% ABV preserves a rich, creamy texture that holds up well neat. A few drops of water can further open the floral and fruit aromatics.

Where is Artist's Blend made? Artist's Blend is produced by Compass Box Whisky Company, an independent blending house headquartered in London, England. The component whiskies are sourced from Scottish distilleries including Clynelish in the Highlands, Linkwood and Balmenach in Speyside, and Cameronbridge in Fife.

What foods pair well with Artist's Blend? Apple tart or tarte Tatin echoes the baked apple notes in the whisky. Aged cheddar or Gruyère stands up to the caramel sweetness without clashing. Smoked salmon works with the blend's creamy texture and citrus undertones. Crème brûlée mirrors the vanilla and toasted sugar character. Roasted pork with a spiced glaze complements the baking spice and oak notes.

What sizes does Artist's Blend come in? The standard release is a 750ml bottle, which is the most widely available format.

Is Artist's Blend worth the price? Artist's Blend positions as a premium blended Scotch that punches above its price tier, largely because of its unusually high malt content and the use of quality first-fill and new oak casks. For drinkers accustomed to entry-level blends, it represents a meaningful step up in complexity and texture.

Why Artist's Blend?

The single most compelling fact about Artist's Blend is its cask policy: it is one of the only blended Scotch whiskies on the market to incorporate new, heavily toasted French oak alongside first-fill bourbon and sherry casks. That decision, combined with a malt whisky percentage far above the industry standard, gives the blend a depth and texture that many NAS single malts struggle to match. Compass Box's commitment to non-chill filtration and natural colour means nothing is stripped away before bottling. For anyone who has written off blended Scotch as inherently inferior, Artist's Blend stands as a direct and persuasive counterargument.
