Description

Springbank 10 Year PX Sherry Finish 700ML is a cask-strength Campbeltown single malt Scotch whisky bottled at 55% ABV in a 700ml bottle. Limited to just 10,800 bottles worldwide, this is the first in Springbank's experimental series exploring maturation in different sherry cask types beyond their traditional Oloroso profile.

Quick Facts: ABV: 55%  |  Origin: Campbeltown, Scotland  |  10 Year Old  |  Distillery: Springbank

Production & Heritage

Springbank Distillery, founded in 1828 on Longrow in the heart of Campbeltown, is one of Scotland's few remaining distilleries to carry out every stage of production on a single site — from floor-malting barley to bottling the finished whisky. This expression uses lightly peated malt run through Springbank's distinctive two-and-a-half-times distillation process, a method unique to the distillery that sits between double and triple distillation in character. The spirit matured for seven years in refill bourbon barrels before being transferred to fresh Pedro Ximénez sherry hogsheads for the final three years, a deliberate departure from Springbank's standard Oloroso-finished releases.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Fig jam and raisin lead immediately, followed by orange oil and toffee. Underneath, damp oak mingles with a gentle sea breeze and a faint wisp of peat smoke.

Taste: The palate opens with dense, sticky dried fruit — dates and raisins layered with dark honey and salted caramel. Mid-palate brings nutmeg, cocoa, and cola-cube spice alongside a mineral, almost saline edge. The texture is oily and mouth-coating, with Muscovado sugar sweetness and a backbone of cinnamon and cherry menthol.

Finish: Long and warming, with candied orange peel, sweetened espresso, and maritime salt lingering well after each sip. A final note of 85% dark chocolate and gentle peat smoke closes things out with satisfying depth.

How to Drink the PX Sherry Finish

At 55% ABV, a few drops of water open up the dense sherry influence and reveal more of the coastal peat character underneath; tasting it at full strength first is recommended to appreciate the weight before diluting gradually. In cocktails, the rich dried-fruit sweetness and cask strength make it a compelling choice: a Rob Roy benefits from the dark, figgy intensity pairing against sweet vermouth; an Old Fashioned allows the PX sweetness to replace some of the sugar component while the peat adds complexity; and a Blood & Sand gains depth from the espresso and chocolate undertones that complement the cherry liqueur.

Best For

  • Springbank collectors seeking limited experimental releases
  • Gifting a whisky enthusiast who values cask-strength, small-batch bottlings
  • Side-by-side tastings comparing sherry influence on Campbeltown malt
  • After-dinner sipping alongside rich desserts or dark chocolate

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the PX Sherry Finish taste like? This expression is dominated by rich, sticky dried fruit — dates, raisins, and fig jam — layered with dark honey, salted caramel, cocoa, and espresso, all underpinned by Springbank's signature coastal peat and mineral salinity.

How does the PX Sherry Finish compare to the standard Springbank 10? The standard Springbank 10 is matured primarily in a combination of bourbon and sherry casks at 46% ABV, producing a more balanced and citrus-forward profile. The PX Sherry Finish pushes the dried-fruit sweetness and tannic spice much further thanks to three years in fresh Pedro Ximénez hogsheads and the higher 55% ABV cask strength.

Is the PX Sherry Finish good for sipping neat? Absolutely — its cask-strength bottling and complex layering of sherry-influenced sweetness, spice, and coastal character reward slow, contemplative sipping. A few drops of water help manage the 55% ABV and reveal additional nuance.

Where is the PX Sherry Finish made? It is produced entirely at Springbank Distillery in Campbeltown, on the Kintyre peninsula of western Scotland. Campbeltown was once home to over 30 distilleries and is recognized as one of Scotch whisky's five official regions.

What foods pair well with the PX Sherry Finish? Dark chocolate truffles complement the cocoa and espresso notes. Aged Manchego cheese echoes the nutty, caramel qualities. Christmas cake or mince pies mirror the dense dried-fruit character. Salted almonds highlight the maritime minerality. Blue cheese, especially Roquefort, stands up to the cask-strength intensity with contrasting tang.

What sizes does the PX Sherry Finish come in? This expression is released in the standard 700ml bottle size.

Is the PX Sherry Finish worth the price? As a limited release of just 10,800 bottles at cask strength, the PX Sherry Finish positions firmly in the premium-to-collectible tier within the Springbank range. The combination of rarity, fully on-site production, and experimental cask finishing gives it strong value relative to comparable limited single malts.

Why the PX Sherry Finish?

This bottling represents a genuine first for Springbank — the inaugural release in a planned series of experimental sherry finishes designed to explore how different sherry cask types interact with Campbeltown malt. With only 10,800 bottles produced worldwide, scarcity is real rather than manufactured. The full floor-to-bottle production at Springbank's Campbeltown site, combined with the two-and-a-half-times distillation method found nowhere else in Scotland, gives this whisky a provenance that few distilleries can match. The three-year finish in fresh PX hogsheads delivers a dense, dessert-like richness while preserving the salty, gently smoky character that defines the house style.
