Description

Sheep Dip Blended Scotch Whiskey 750ML is a blended malt Scotch whisky bottled at 40% ABV in a 750ml format, composed of 16 different single malts. This expression earned a remarkable 96/100 score at the 2015 New York Ultimate Spirits Challenge, where judges deemed it "extraordinary" — a testament to the depth achieved by marrying malts from four distinct Scottish regions.

Quick Facts: ABV: 40%  |  Origin: Scotland (Lowland, Highland, Speyside, Islay)  |  Aged 8–20 Years  |  Producer: Spencerfield Spirits (Ian Macleod Distillers)

Production & Heritage

Sheep Dip takes its name from the old farming practice of hiding whisky expenses in the farm ledger under "sheep dip" — a nod to Scotland's rural whisky traditions. Originally created by Spencerfield Spirits and now produced under Ian Macleod Distillers since 2016, the blend draws on 16 single malts sourced from Lowland, Highland, Speyside, and Islay distilleries. The component whiskies range from 8 to 20 years old and are matured across first-fill sherry casks, first-fill bourbon barrels, and refill oak, producing a layered and complex final product. Legendary master blender Richard Paterson — whose nose was famously insured for £7 million — crafted the blend in consultation with Alex Nicol, who previously worked at Glenmorangie and Laphroaig.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: The nose opens soft and creamy with fragrant pear and melon sweetness, layered with honeyed toffee. Beneath the fruit, a faint trace of coastal air and gentle malt anchors the aroma.

Taste: The palate enters soft and understated, built on a malty backbone. Mid-palate, toffee sweetness mingles with subtle wood influence, while a touch of smoke surfaces from the Islay components. A dash of pepper arrives at the finish line of the taste, giving structure to the otherwise gentle profile.

Finish: Medium in length with a smooth, slightly warming texture. Lingering notes of malt, gentle smoke, and faint toffee sweetness fade gradually.

How to Drink Sheep Dip

Sheep Dip drinks well neat or with a few drops of water, which opens up the honeyed sweetness and softens the peppery edge. A single large ice cube also suits this whisky, keeping it chilled without diluting the malt character too quickly.

In cocktails, the blend's versatility across four regional styles makes it surprisingly adaptable. A Rob Roy benefits from the toffee and sherry-cask sweetness playing off sweet vermouth. A Penicillin leans into the gentle smoke and honey notes without overpowering the ginger and lemon. A Blood & Sand works well here because the malt's fruit-forward nose complements the orange juice and cherry liqueur.

Best For

  • Scotch drinkers exploring blended malts beyond single-distillery expressions
  • Gifting a whisky enthusiast who appreciates multi-region complexity
  • After-dinner sipping alongside dessert or cheese courses
  • Building a home bar with a versatile, cocktail-ready Scotch

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Sheep Dip taste like? Sheep Dip delivers a smooth, malty profile dominated by honey and toffee sweetness, with gentle smoke from its Islay components and a peppery finish. The overall impression balances Speyside-like complexity with faint maritime character.

How does Sheep Dip compare to Johnnie Walker Green Label? Both are blended malt Scotch whiskies that draw from multiple regions, but Johnnie Walker Green Label carries a 15-year age statement and tends toward a more pronounced smoky, grassy character. Sheep Dip uses a wider range of component ages (8–20 years) and leans more heavily into honeyed sweetness and toffee from its sherry-cask maturation.

Is Sheep Dip good for sipping neat? Yes — its 40% ABV and soft, creamy texture make it highly approachable neat. A few drops of water can further open up the pear and honey notes.

Where is Sheep Dip made? Sheep Dip is a Scottish blended malt produced by Spencerfield Spirits, now under the ownership of Ian Macleod Distillers, based in Scotland. The 16 component single malts are sourced from distilleries across Lowland, Highland, Speyside, and Islay.

What foods pair well with Sheep Dip? Aged cheddar or Gruyère brings out the toffee and malt sweetness. Smoked salmon complements the coastal and gentle smoke notes. Dark chocolate works with the sherry-cask richness. Honey-glazed roasted nuts mirror the honeyed nose. Apple tart or poached pears echo the fruit character on the palate.

What sizes does Sheep Dip come in? Sheep Dip is widely available in the standard 750ml bottle.

Is Sheep Dip worth the price? Sheep Dip positions as a mid-range blended malt, and the inclusion of 16 single malts aged up to 20 years in quality casks represents strong value at this tier — particularly given its 96-point score at the 2015 Ultimate Spirits Challenge and multiple IWSC Gold medals.

Why Sheep Dip?

Few blended malts at this price tier draw from 16 distinct single malts spanning four of Scotland's major whisky regions. The combination of first-fill sherry, first-fill bourbon, and refill oak cask maturation across an 8-to-20-year age range produces a complexity that belies its accessible 40% ABV. The 96/100 score at the 2015 Ultimate Spirits Challenge, along with Gold medals at the International Wine & Spirits Competition in 2003 and 2005, confirm that the blend has earned critical recognition repeatedly over more than a decade. With Richard Paterson's involvement in the blending process, Sheep Dip stands as one of the more thoughtfully constructed multi-regional malts available.
