Description

Kilkerran 12 Year Single Malt 700ML is a 46% ABV Campbeltown single malt Scotch whisky from Glengyle Distillery, matured for twelve years in a combination of ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks. It earned 90.5 points in Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2021, affirming its standing as one of Campbeltown's most compelling modern drams.

Quick Facts: ABV: 46%  |  Origin: Campbeltown, Scotland  |  Age: 12 Years  |  Distillery: Glengyle

Production & Heritage

Glengyle Distillery was originally founded in 1872 by William Mitchell but shuttered in 1925 during the collapse of Campbeltown's whisky industry. It was revived in 2004 by J&A Mitchell & Co., the same family behind Springbank, making it Campbeltown's newest operating distillery. Production uses traditional floor-malted barley and double distillation through copper pot stills — notably repurposed Ben Wyvis stills modified to fit within Glengyle's original stone walls. The 12 Year expression is matured in a vatting of roughly 70% ex-bourbon casks and 30% ex-sherry casks, which gives the whisky its layered interplay of fruit, vanilla, and maritime character. The whisky carries the name "Kilkerran" — after the original Gaelic name for Campbeltown — because the Glengyle trademark was already held by another company for a blended malt.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Oak leads immediately, giving way to toasted marshmallows and dried fruit pudding. Behind that initial sweetness, notes of cherry, marzipan, and a gentle wisp of peat emerge.

Taste: The entry is distinctly fruity — bright citrus and orange peel set the tone before a mid-palate shift toward vanilla, butterscotch, and honeycomb. At its peak, there is a biscuity, almost digestive-biscuit quality that anchors the sweetness with something earthy and grounded. A briny, coastal oiliness characteristic of Campbeltown runs throughout.

Finish: Smooth and velvety, tapering into lemon meringue with a lingering salinity. The length is moderate, leaving a clean impression of citrus peel and gentle smoke.

How to Drink Kilkerran 12

At 46% ABV, Kilkerran 12 drinks beautifully neat, though a few drops of water open up the citrus and marzipan notes further. It also holds its character well over a single large ice cube. In cocktails, it brings coastal depth and fruit-forward complexity: try it in a Penicillin, where its light peat and honey notes complement the ginger-lemon framework; in a Rob Roy, where the sherry-cask influence pairs naturally with sweet vermouth; or in a Highball with quality soda water, which amplifies the citrus brightness and maritime salinity.

  • Gifting a whisky lover who appreciates distillery heritage and independent production
  • Building a regional tasting flight alongside other Campbeltown malts
  • After-dinner sipping on evenings that call for something complex but approachable

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Kilkerran 12 taste like? Kilkerran 12 leads with bright citrus and orange peel, followed by vanilla, butterscotch, and honeycomb, with a briny Campbeltown oiliness running throughout. The finish is smooth, tapering into lemon meringue and gentle coastal salinity.

How does Kilkerran 12 compare to Springbank 10? Both are Campbeltown single malts produced under the umbrella of J&A Mitchell & Co., and they share a similar maritime, slightly peated DNA. Kilkerran 12 tends toward more pronounced fruit and citrus sweetness from its bourbon-heavy cask program, while Springbank 10 is triple-distilled with a funkier, more complex oiliness at its core.

Is Kilkerran 12 good for sipping neat? Yes — its 46% ABV provides enough body and intensity for neat drinking without being aggressive, and the balance of fruit, malt, and coastal character rewards slow sipping.

Where is Kilkerran 12 made? Kilkerran 12 is distilled at Glengyle Distillery in Campbeltown, a small town on the Kintyre Peninsula in western Scotland that was once home to over 30 distilleries and is now one of Scotch whisky's five recognized regions.

What foods pair well with Kilkerran 12? Smoked salmon or cured seafood highlights the whisky's maritime salinity. Aged cheddar or Gruyère mirrors its butterscotch and malty depth. Lemon tart echoes the citrus notes in the finish. Dark chocolate with orange peel complements the fruity, sherry-influenced elements. Oatcakes with honey lean into the cereal and honeycomb character.

What sizes does Kilkerran 12 come in? The standard expression is widely available in the 700ml bottle size, which is the format most common in European and international markets.

Is Kilkerran 12 worth the price? Kilkerran 12 positions in the mid-premium tier for single malt Scotch, and given its 12-year age statement, traditional floor-malting, and small-batch Campbeltown provenance, it represents strong value relative to similarly aged single malts from larger, more commercially driven distilleries.

Why Kilkerran 12?

Campbeltown once held over 30 working distilleries; today it has three, and Glengyle is the most recent revival. That scarcity alone makes Kilkerran 12 notable, but the liquid justifies the attention on its own terms. The use of repurposed Ben Wyvis copper pot stills, traditional floor-malted barley, and a carefully balanced bourbon-sherry cask program produces a whisky with genuine regional identity — maritime, fruity, lightly peated, and unmistakably Campbeltown. For drinkers seeking single malt with provenance and character beyond the Highland and Speyside mainstream, this 12-year-old expression delivers both.
