Description

Jura 12 Year 750ML is a 12-year-old single malt Scotch whisky from the Isle of Jura, bottled at 40% ABV in a 750ml bottle. This island expression earned a Double Gold at the SIP Awards and a Gold at the NZ Spirits Awards, distinguished by its combination of ex-bourbon maturation with an Oloroso sherry cask finish that layers sweetness over gentle peat.

Quick Facts: ABV: 40%  |  Origin: Isle of Jura, Inner Hebrides, Scotland  |  12 Year Age Statement  |  Distillery: Isle of Jura Distillery

Production & Heritage

The Isle of Jura Distillery sits on one of Scotland's most remote inhabited islands, home to roughly 200 people and some 6,000 deer. The whisky is made from 100% malted barley and distilled in copper pot stills that stand 28 feet tall — the second tallest in Scotland behind Glenmorangie. That exceptional height forces greater copper contact and reflux during distillation, stripping heavier compounds and producing a notably lighter, more delicate spirit than many island malts. The 12 Year spends its full maturation in American white oak ex-bourbon barrels before receiving a finishing period in Oloroso sherry casks, adding dried fruit richness and a layer of baking spice complexity.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Honey and roasted coffee beans arrive first, followed by bright citrus peel and a thread of gentle smoke. Beneath that initial sweetness, lightly toasted walnut and a soft tropical fruit note emerge with time in the glass.

Taste: The entry is medium-bodied with toffee and ripe peach, moving into a mid-palate of cinnamon spice and dark chocolate. A delicate peat smoke weaves through the sweeter notes without dominating, joined by espresso and hints of banana as the profile develops.

Finish: Lingering and smooth, with salted caramel giving way to soft sherry sweetness and a final trace of burnt orange peel. The length is moderate, leaving a clean warmth that invites another sip.

How to Drink Jura 12

Neat or with a few drops of water is the ideal starting point — a splash opens up the tropical fruit and chocolate notes Wine Enthusiast identified in their review. On the rocks, the toffee and caramel flavors come forward while the smoke recedes. For cocktails, consider a Rob Roy, where Jura 12's sherry-cask sweetness harmonizes naturally with sweet vermouth; a Blood and Sand, where its citrus and chocolate tones complement cherry liqueur and orange juice; or a Penicillin, where the gentle peat provides enough smoke to anchor the cocktail without overwhelming the ginger and honey.

Best For

  • Introducing someone to island single malts without heavy peat
  • After-dinner sipping alongside chocolate or coffee desserts
  • Gifting a whisky enthusiast who appreciates sherry-finished expressions
  • Building a Scotch collection that represents diverse regional styles

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Jura 12 taste like? Jura 12 delivers toffee, cinnamon, and dark chocolate on a medium body, with gentle island peat smoke underneath and a salted caramel finish shaped by its Oloroso sherry cask maturation.

How does Jura 12 compare to Highland Park 12? Both are 12-year-old island single malts with sherry cask influence, but Highland Park 12 leans into heathery, heavier peat smoke, while Jura 12 uses Scotland's second-tallest stills to produce a lighter, more fruit-forward spirit with softer smoke. Jura 12 also finishes in sherry casks rather than incorporating sherry-seasoned wood throughout its full maturation the way Highland Park does.

Is Jura 12 good for sipping neat? Yes — at 40% ABV with a medium body and balanced sweetness, Jura 12 is approachable neat and rewards a few drops of water that open up its citrus and espresso layers.

Where is Jura 12 made? Jura 12 is produced at the Isle of Jura Distillery on the Isle of Jura, one of Scotland's Inner Hebridean islands located just off the west coast, accessible only by a small ferry from the neighboring island of Islay.

What foods pair well with Jura 12? Dark chocolate truffles complement its cocoa and coffee notes; smoked salmon mirrors its gentle peat; blue cheese matches its sherry-derived sweetness; roasted nuts echo its toasted walnut aroma; and citrus tarts highlight its bright orange peel character.

What sizes does Jura 12 come in? Jura 12 is widely available in the standard 750ml bottle, and may also be found in 50ml miniatures depending on market availability.

Is Jura 12 worth the price? Jura 12 positions as a mid-range single malt that punches above its tier thanks to its sherry cask finish and Double Gold SIP Awards recognition, making it a strong value within the 12-year-old island Scotch category.

Why Jura 12?

What separates Jura 12 from the crowded field of 12-year-old single malts is how its production defies island expectations. Those 28-foot-tall pot stills — second only to Glenmorangie's in all of Scotland — generate a level of delicacy and fruit character rarely found in whisky made surrounded by the sea. The Oloroso sherry cask finish then adds a layer of dried fruit richness and spice that rounds out the profile without masking the distillery's inherently lighter character. For drinkers who want island provenance without Islay-level peat intensity, Jura 12 occupies a distinctive niche that few competitors can match.
