Description

Copper Dog Blended Scotch 750ML is a blended malt Scotch whisky made from eight Speyside single malts, bottled at 40% ABV in a 750ml bottle. A Double Gold winner at both the SIP Awards and the 2022 New York International Spirits Competition, this expression has earned serious recognition for a whisky rooted in Speyside tradition and barroom irreverence.

Quick Facts: ABV: 40%  |  Origin: Speyside, Scotland  |  Blended Malt (8 Single Malts)  |  Created in collaboration with The Craigellachie Hotel

Production & Heritage

Copper Dog takes its name from an old Speyside tradition: distillery workers would hide a length of copper pipe — the "copper dog" — in their trousers to smuggle whisky out of the warehouses. That spirit of roguish resourcefulness inspired Piers Adams and master blender Stuart Morrison, working alongside the team at the historic Craigellachie Hotel in the heart of Speyside, to develop a blended malt composed of no fewer than eight Speyside single malts. The component whiskies are slowly married together in old oak casks for a minimum of three months, allowing the individual characters to integrate into a cohesive whole rather than simply being vatted and bottled.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Fresh toffee apple and ripe orchard fruits — pears and green apples — rise first, followed by a wave of dark berries and a hint of citrus zest. Underneath, sweet wood and creamy vanilla fudge round out the nose with gentle warmth.

Taste: The palate opens with juicy orchard fruit and peach, moving quickly into honey sweetness and marzipan at the mid-palate. A distinct dash of cinnamon and gentle baking spice builds through the back palate, balanced by creamy vanilla and a touch of pepper.

Finish: Medium in length, the finish dries gracefully with dried fruit, mild licorice, and soft oak tannins. A trailing note of spice keeps things lively without becoming harsh.

How to Drink Copper Dog

Copper Dog is versatile enough for neat sipping but truly shines when mixed — its fruity, spice-driven profile holds its own against other cocktail ingredients without getting lost. A Highball with quality soda water and a lemon twist lets the orchard fruit notes sing. It makes an excellent Penicillin, where the honey-ginger-lemon combination amplifies the whisky's natural sweetness and spice. And in a Blood and Sand, the berry and citrus qualities integrate seamlessly with sweet vermouth and cherry liqueur.

Best For

  • Building a home cocktail bar centered on Scotch-based drinks
  • Introducing single malt drinkers to the blended malt category
  • Casual weekend sipping with friends who prefer approachable whisky
  • Gifting a Scotch-curious drinker who enjoys fruity, easy-drinking spirits

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Copper Dog taste like? Copper Dog delivers a fruit-forward profile built on ripe orchard fruits, peach, and honey, with baking spice and cinnamon adding complexity through the mid-palate and a medium-length finish of dried fruit and gentle oak.

How does Copper Dog compare to Monkey Shoulder? Both are Speyside blended malts positioned at a similar price tier and marketed as cocktail-friendly whiskies, but Copper Dog uses eight component single malts compared to Monkey Shoulder's three, resulting in a slightly more layered and fruit-forward flavor profile. Monkey Shoulder tends toward a maltier, creamier character, while Copper Dog leans more into orchard fruit and spice.

Is Copper Dog good for cocktails? Copper Dog is one of the stronger blended malt options for cocktails, as its pronounced fruit and spice character cuts through mixers without disappearing. It works particularly well in Highballs, Penicillins, and other Scotch-forward mixed drinks.

Where is Copper Dog made? Copper Dog is produced in the Speyside region of Scotland and was created in collaboration with the team at The Craigellachie Hotel, a landmark establishment in the village of Craigellachie at the heart of Scotland's most whisky-dense region. Master blender Stuart Morrison selects and marries the eight component single malts.

What foods pair well with Copper Dog? Smoked salmon or gravlax highlights the whisky's fruit and spice balance. Apple tart or pear crumble mirrors the orchard fruit notes. Aged cheddar or Comté cheese plays off the vanilla and oak. Honey-glazed roasted nuts complement the sweetness and gentle pepper. Dark chocolate with a high cocoa content pairs well with the dried fruit and cinnamon on the finish.

What sizes does Copper Dog come in? Copper Dog is widely available in the standard 750ml bottle size.

Is Copper Dog worth the price? Copper Dog positions as an accessible, entry-level blended malt that over-delivers for its price tier, particularly given the complexity that comes from blending eight distinct Speyside single malts. Its multiple gold-level awards — including Double Gold at the New York International Spirits Competition — reinforce its standing as strong value in the category.

Why Copper Dog?

The use of eight Speyside single malts is notably generous for a whisky at this price point, and the minimum three-month marrying period in old oak casks gives the blend a cohesion that cheaper vatted malts often lack. Gold at the 2022 International Spirits Challenge and Double Gold at the 2022 New York International Spirits Competition confirm that the quality registers with professional palates, not just casual drinkers. The backstory — rooted in the real Speyside tradition of the copper dog smuggling pipe and developed alongside one of the region's most storied hotels — gives the brand a genuine sense of place that many competitors in this tier cannot match. For anyone looking for a blended malt that works equally well neat or in a cocktail shaker, Copper Dog earns serious consideration.
