Description

Compass Box Peat Monster 750ML is a blended malt Scotch whisky bottled at 46% ABV that layers intense Islay peat smoke over a core of honeyed malt character. Awarded 94 points by Whisky Advocate and named their Scotch Whisky Blend of the Year in 2010, this expression has become one of the most respected peated blends in the category.

Quick Facts: ABV: 46% (92 proof)  |  Origin: Scotland (blended from multiple regions)  |  Style: Blended Malt Scotch Whisky  |  Producer: Compass Box Whisky, London

Production & Heritage

Compass Box was founded in London in 2000 by American-born whisky maker John Glaser, a former Johnnie Walker marketing director who left Diageo to pursue his vision of artful blending. The current Peat Monster recipe draws approximately 64% of its malt from Caol Ila (aged 10–15 years), 35% from Laphroaig (aged around 8 years), and roughly 1% from a proprietary Compass Box Highland blend. After vatting, the components undergo an extended marrying period of several months before bottling, allowing the distinct smoke profiles — seaside and medicinal from Laphroaig, kipper-like and ashy from Caol Ila — to knit together around a fruity malt core. The whisky is bottled at a natural-strength-friendly 46% without chill filtration, preserving its full body and oily texture.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: The nose opens with sweet clover honey and heather before waves of dense peat smoke roll in. Behind the smokiness, there is salted butter, damp earth, and a gentle coastal brine reminiscent of a campfire on a misty shoreline.

Taste: On entry, the palate is immediately smoky and surprisingly creamy, with raw honey and caramel coating the tongue. The mid-palate broadens into rich maltiness, orange peel, and toast, then builds toward tar, smoked olive, and a peppery warmth. An umami depth — almost mushroom-like — emerges alongside seaweed and kiln ash, delivering classic Islay character without harshness.

Finish: Long and warming, with smoky green tea, bonfire embers, and lingering brine that slowly gives way to a dry, malty sweetness. The oily texture carries the finish well past the final sip, leaving boat-dock saltiness and a trace of medicinal peat.

How to Drink Peat Monster

Peat Monster performs best neat or with a few drops of water, which opens up the honey and fruit notes hiding beneath the smoke. The 46% bottling strength gives it enough backbone for cocktails as well. A Penicillin gains extra dimension from the Caol Ila–Laphroaig blend, creating a richer smoky honey balance. A Smoky Rob Roy pairs the malt's brine and peat with sweet vermouth for an elegant, fireside sipper. And a simple Peat Monster Highball with chilled soda water stretches the coastal smoke into a surprisingly refreshing long drink.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Peat Monster taste like? Peat Monster delivers intense Islay-style peat smoke layered over creamy honey, orange peel, and toasted malt, with a distinctive brine and umami depth that lingers through a long, warming finish.

How does Peat Monster compare to Ardbeg Uigeadail? Both occupy the premium peated whisky tier, but Peat Monster blends smoke from two Islay distilleries (Caol Ila and Laphroaig) for a broader peat spectrum, while Uigeadail draws its character from a single distillery with significant sherry-cask influence. Peat Monster tends toward coastal brine and honey, whereas Uigeadail leans into dark fruit and higher-proof intensity at 54.2% ABV.

Is Peat Monster good for sipping neat? Absolutely — the 46% ABV and non-chill-filtered bottling deliver full flavor and an oily, rounded mouthfeel that rewards slow, undiluted sipping. A few drops of water can further reveal the sweeter honey and fruit layers beneath the smoke.

Where is Peat Monster made? Peat Monster is created by Compass Box Whisky, a blending house based in London, England, founded by John Glaser in 2000. The component malts are distilled in Scotland — primarily at Caol Ila and Laphroaig on the island of Islay — then married and bottled by Compass Box.

What foods pair well with Peat Monster? Smoked salmon or smoked oysters echo the coastal brine beautifully. Aged cheddar or Comté cheese balances the peat with nutty richness. Dark chocolate with sea salt mirrors the sweet-savory interplay. Grilled lamb chops stand up to the smoke intensity, and charcuterie with mustard brings out the whisky's peppery undertone.

What sizes does Peat Monster come in? The standard bottle is 750ml, which is the most widely available format.

Is Peat Monster worth the price? Peat Monster positions as a premium blended malt, sitting below ultra-premium single malts like Laphroaig 18 but above entry-level peated options. Given its 94-point Whisky Advocate score and the quality of its Caol Ila and Laphroaig components, it represents strong value within the serious peated Scotch category.

Why Peat Monster?

What separates Peat Monster from the crowded peated whisky field is its architecture. Rather than relying on a single distillery's house style, John Glaser designed a recipe that blends Caol Ila's ashy, kipper-smoke character with Laphroaig's medicinal, seaside pungency, then married them for months to create something neither distillery produces alone. The result earned 94 points from Whisky Advocate, a spot at #9 on their Top 20 Whiskies of 2020 (93 points), and Grand Gold at the Meininger's International Spirits Award. For drinkers who want layered, complex peat rather than one-dimensional smoke, this is one of the most thoughtfully constructed expressions on the market.
