Description

Creyente Mezcal Joven Tobala 750ML is a 40% ABV joven mezcal made from 100% Tobala agave (agave Potatorum) sourced from Oaxaca, Mexico. This expression earned a Gold medal at the 2025 San Francisco World Spirits Competition and a Gold at the 2024 ASCOT Awards, establishing itself as one of the more recognized Tobala mezcals in the category.

Quick Facts: ABV: 40%  |  Origin: Oaxaca, Mexico  |  Joven (Unaged)  |  Brand Owner: Casa Cuervo

Production & Heritage

Creyente was launched in 2016 by Casa Cuervo (José Cuervo), one of the oldest and largest spirits companies in Mexico. What sets the Tobala expression apart is its blending approach: two separate mezcals are produced traditionally using maguey Tobala agave harvested from distinct regions within Oaxaca, then skillfully combined before bottling under the direction of the brand's Maestro Mezcalero. Tobala agave is a wild or semi-wild species known for smaller piñas and longer maturation periods compared to Espadín, which contributes to the complexity and relative scarcity of mezcals made from it. The joven classification means the spirit is unaged, allowing the character of the Tobala agave and the smoky roasting process to come through without oak influence.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: The nose opens with creamy vanilla and sweet agave before shifting into herbal and floral territory. A gentle smokiness weaves through, underscored by earthy depth and a subtle prickle of Szechuan peppercorn.

Taste: The entry is delicately soft, with fruity and smoky tones meeting on the mid-palate in a balanced, almost creamy texture. As it develops, sweet agave mingles with floral notes and a measured dose of black pepper spice. The mouthfeel stays light and approachable without sacrificing complexity.

Finish: The finish is notably long, delivering citrusy brightness alongside grounding earthiness. Lingering traces of cedar, pine, and gentle smoke carry through to the end.

How to Drink Creyente Tobala

Tobala mezcals reward sipping neat at room temperature, where the nuanced floral and earthy character can fully develop. A few drops of water can open up additional aromatics without diminishing the smokiness. For cocktail use, its refined profile works well in a Mezcal Negroni, where the smoke and earth complement Campari's bitterness; a Naked & Famous, where the citrus and floral notes harmonize with Aperol and yellow Chartreuse; and a Mezcal Paloma, where the Tobala's delicate fruit character lifts the grapefruit soda without overwhelming it.

Best For

  • Gifting a mezcal enthusiast who wants to explore Tobala agave expressions
  • Side-by-side tasting alongside an Espadín mezcal to highlight varietal differences
  • A post-dinner sipping spirit when something lighter and more floral than whisky is desired
  • Building a home mezcal collection anchored by different agave varietals

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Creyente Tobala taste like? Creyente Tobala delivers a soft, approachable palate where sweet agave and fruity tones meet gentle smoke and black pepper spice, finishing with citrus brightness and earthy depth.

How does Creyente Tobala compare to Montelobos Tobala? Montelobos Tobala leans more vegetal and citrus-forward with green pepper and roasted fig notes, while Creyente Tobala tends toward a creamier, more floral and sweet profile with vanilla and peppercorn character. Both use Tobala agave from Oaxaca, but the dual-region blending method in Creyente creates a distinctly layered expression.

Is Creyente Tobala good for sipping neat? Yes — its soft entry, balanced smokiness, and long finish make it well-suited for neat sipping, particularly for drinkers who find some mezcals too aggressively smoky.

Where is Creyente Tobala made? Creyente Tobala is produced in Oaxaca, Mexico, the heartland of mezcal production, using Tobala agave sourced from multiple distinct sub-regions within the state.

What foods pair well with Creyente Tobala? Grilled stone fruits like peaches or nectarines mirror its fruity and smoky character. Oaxacan mole negro complements the earthy depth. Fresh ceviche with citrus works with the bright finish. Aged manchego cheese echoes the creamy vanilla notes. Dark chocolate with a high cacao percentage pairs naturally with the lingering smoke and cedar.

What sizes does Creyente Tobala come in? Creyente Mezcal Joven Tobala is available in the standard 750ml bottle size.

Is Creyente Tobala worth the price? Creyente Tobala positions as a mid-premium Tobala mezcal, and the dual-region blending technique along with consistent competition recognition — including a 2025 SFWSC Gold — place it firmly in the competitive range for single-varietal mezcals made from this harder-to-source agave.

Why Creyente Tobala?

The defining feature of this expression is its dual-region blending methodology, which takes two separately produced Tobala mezcals from different areas of Oaxaca and combines them to create a more layered and complex profile than a single-source Tobala typically delivers. Tobala agave is inherently more limited than the widely cultivated Espadín, giving any well-made Tobala mezcal a degree of distinction. Competitive validation supports the quality — a Gold at the 2025 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, a Gold at the 2024 ASCOT Awards, and a Silver at the 2025 International Spirits Challenge. For drinkers looking to explore the floral, earthy side of mezcal beyond entry-level Espadín expressions, Creyente Tobala delivers a refined and accessible point of entry into the varietal.
