Description

Meiomi Pinot Noir is a 750ml, 13.7% ABV California Pinot Noir blending coastal fruit from three of the state's most respected growing regions. Founded by Joe Wagner in 2006, the Meiomi label — whose name derives from the Wappo word for "coast" — has earned 92 points from The Tasting Panel and become one of California's highest-volume Pinot Noir producers, shipping well over 700,000 cases annually.

Quick Facts: ABV: 13.7%  |  Origin: California, USA (Sonoma, Monterey, Santa Barbara Counties)  |  Style: Multi-Regional Coastal Blend  |  Producer: Meiomi Wines (The Wine Group)

Production & Heritage

Joe Wagner, a member of the family behind Caymus Vineyards, launched Meiomi in 2006 with the idea of blending Pinot Noir from Sonoma County, Monterey County, and Santa Barbara County to create a style greater than any single-appellation bottling. Wagner noted that each coastal appellation "adds something to the Meiomi blend," with Monterey providing concentrated value fruit from its cool, isolated growing conditions, while Sonoma contributes structure and Santa Barbara adds aromatic complexity. The wine is roughly 97% Pinot Noir with trace amounts of complementary varieties including Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Chardonnay, and Grenache. Fermentation employs pump-overs for balanced extraction, followed by six months of aging in French oak barrels. Constellation Brands acquired the brand in 2015, and ownership transferred to The Wine Group in 2025.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: The nose opens with ripe dark cherry and plum, layered with fresh strawberry and a thread of orange blossom. Underneath, tobacco leaf and toasty oak provide a savory anchor.

Taste: On entry, lush blackberry and dark cherry fruit dominate, carrying a jammy sweetness that's rounded rather than sharp. The mid-palate introduces mocha, vanilla, and light cedar spice from the French oak aging. A subtle tobacco note and gentle tannins emerge at the peak, adding welcome grip without bitterness.

Finish: Medium in length with soft, velvety tannins and a lingering raspberry and cocoa trail. The oak influence fades gracefully, leaving a clean, fruit-forward close.

How to Drink Meiomi Pinot Noir

Serve slightly below room temperature — around 60–65°F — to bring the berry aromatics forward while keeping the oak-driven sweetness in check. A large-bowled Burgundy glass allows the layered nose to open fully. Meiomi's ripe, fruit-driven profile also makes it a strong cocktail and mixed-drink component: a Pinot Noir Sangria with sliced stone fruit and a splash of brandy plays into its jammy character; a Red Wine Spritzer with sparkling water and a citrus twist makes a refreshing warm-weather pour; and a Kalimotxo (red wine and cola over ice) works surprisingly well given the wine's inherent dark-berry sweetness and mocha undertones.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Meiomi Pinot Noir taste like? Meiomi Pinot Noir delivers ripe dark cherry and blackberry fruit with prominent mocha, vanilla, and soft oak spice. The overall impression is rich and fruit-forward with a velvety, medium-bodied finish.

How does Meiomi Pinot Noir compare to La Crema Pinot Noir? Both are high-volume California Pinot Noirs, but Meiomi leans toward a riper, more overtly fruity and oak-influenced style, while La Crema typically shows brighter acidity and a leaner, more restrained profile rooted in its Sonoma Coast and Monterey bottlings. Meiomi's multi-county blending approach also differs from La Crema's appellation-specific lineup.

Is Meiomi Pinot Noir good for beginners? Yes — its approachable fruit sweetness, soft tannins, and smooth oak character make it one of the most popular entry points into Pinot Noir for newer red wine drinkers. The lack of sharp acidity or aggressive tannin keeps it accessible without sacrificing flavor complexity.

Where is Meiomi Pinot Noir made? Meiomi Pinot Noir is produced in California, blending grapes sourced from vineyards in Sonoma County, Monterey County, and Santa Barbara County along the state's central and northern coastline. The brand is currently owned by The Wine Group.

What foods pair well with Meiomi Pinot Noir? Roasted salmon or grilled tuna steaks complement the wine's berry fruit without overwhelming its medium body. Mushroom risotto echoes the earthy, oak-driven notes. Herb-crusted pork tenderloin plays well against the vanilla and mocha undertones. Aged Gruyère or Comté cheese highlights the wine's subtle spice. Dark chocolate desserts mirror the cocoa finish.

What sizes does Meiomi Pinot Noir come in? Meiomi Pinot Noir is widely available in the standard 750ml bottle as well as a 375ml half-bottle format.

Is Meiomi Pinot Noir worth the price? Meiomi positions as a mid-range California Pinot Noir — above basic supermarket labels but well below single-vineyard bottlings — and its consistent quality, recognizable style, and 92-point score from The Tasting Panel place it competitively within that tier for everyday drinking.

Why Meiomi Pinot Noir?

The tri-county blending strategy is the defining feature here: by drawing on Sonoma's structural tannins, Monterey's concentrated fruit, and Santa Barbara's aromatic lift, the winemaking team constructs a Pinot Noir that reads as richer and more layered than most single-region bottlings at this price point. Six months in French oak adds polish without masking the fruit core. The wine's 92-point score from The Tasting Panel reflects a consistency that has kept it among California's top-selling Pinot Noirs for over a decade. For drinkers who want a reliably full-flavored, fruit-driven Pinot Noir without the premium of Burgundy or Oregon single-vineyard wines, Meiomi remains a benchmark in its category.
