Quick Facts: ABV: 13.8%  |  Origin: California, USA  |  Rhône-Style White Blend  |  Producer: Turley Wine Cellars

Production & Heritage

Turley Wine Cellars was founded in 1993 by Larry Turley, a former Emergency Room physician — the wine's name, "White Coat," is a direct nod to his medical career. While Turley built its reputation on old-vine Zinfandel and Petite Sirah, The White Coat stands as the estate's sole white wine, sourcing Roussanne, Grenache Blanc, and Vermentino from three estate vineyards across the Shenandoah Valley, Howell Mountain, and Willow Creek sub-AVAs. Fermentation relies entirely on native yeast, and the wine ages for 15 months in a combination of concrete egg vessels and 100% used French oak barrels — no new oak is introduced. There is no lees stirring; the wine's viscosity and texture derive solely from the grapes themselves. It is bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: The nose opens with white flowers and honeycomb before moving into ripe stone fruit — white peach and nectarine — layered over crushed minerals and a whisper of orange peel. A faint straw-like quality and wet stone emerge with time in the glass.

Taste: On entry, sliced green pear and green apple give the palate a bright, focused core. At mid-palate, the wine gains body with white plum and citrus flavors, accented by floral and subtle yeasty notes. Lean acidity keeps the texture dynamic despite noticeable viscosity, creating a push-pull between richness and freshness.

Finish: The finish runs moderate to long, carrying sun-warmed stone fruit, white pepper, and a persistent mineral thread. A trace of warm rock and straw lingers well after the last sip.

How to Drink White Coat

Serve lightly chilled — around 50–55°F — to allow the aromatic complexity to fully develop without muting the stone fruit and floral notes. A white Burgundy glass with a slightly wider bowl helps concentrate the nose. While this wine is most rewarding on its own or alongside food, it can also anchor creative wine cocktails: a White Sangria where its stone fruit and floral character amplify fresh peach and citrus; a French 75 variation using White Coat in place of Champagne for added weight and texture; or a Spritz topped with sparkling water and a strip of orange peel to highlight its citrus and mineral backbone.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does White Coat taste like? White Coat delivers ripe stone fruit — white peach, nectarine, and green pear — woven through with white flowers, citrus, and crushed minerals. The palate balances noticeable viscosity with bright, lean acidity, finishing with lingering white pepper and warm stone.

How does White Coat compare to white Châteauneuf-du-Pape? Both rely on Rhône white varieties like Roussanne and Grenache Blanc, but White Coat's California origins yield riper, more generous stone fruit and a slightly broader texture. White Châteauneuf-du-Pape blanc tends to be more restrained and herbal, with higher mineral tension from limestone soils.

Is White Coat good for sipping on its own? Absolutely — its aromatic complexity, textural weight, and balanced acidity make it a compelling stand-alone pour, especially when served lightly chilled and given a few minutes to open up in the glass.

Where is White Coat made? White Coat is produced by Turley Wine Cellars in California, drawing fruit from three estate vineyards across the Shenandoah Valley, Howell Mountain, and Willow Creek sub-AVAs.

What foods pair well with White Coat? Grilled shrimp or lobster, where the wine's weight matches the richness of the shellfish; roasted chicken with herbs, complementing its floral and stone fruit notes; aged Gruyère or Comté, whose nuttiness echoes the honeycomb aromas; Mediterranean vegetable dishes with olive oil and lemon; and pork loin with a stone fruit glaze that mirrors the wine's peach and nectarine character.

What sizes does White Coat come in? White Coat is available in the standard 750ml bottle.

Is White Coat worth the price? White Coat positions as a premium California white blend, and its combination of multi-vineyard sourcing, concrete egg and neutral oak aging, native yeast fermentation, and unfined/unfiltered bottling reflects a level of winemaking ambition uncommon at its price tier. Consistent 90+ scores from Robert Parker reinforce its standing as strong value among serious Rhône-style whites.

Why White Coat?

In a market saturated with Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, White Coat occupies rare ground — a California white Rhône blend from a producer known primarily for powerhouse reds. The use of concrete egg fermentation alongside 100% neutral French oak, with no lees stirring and no fining or filtration, yields a wine whose texture is entirely grape-driven rather than winemaker-imposed. Larry Turley's ER background gives the wine its distinctive name and hints at the precision behind its production: three distinct sub-AVAs contributing three different Rhône varieties, each adding a structural layer. With 91 points from Robert Parker and a track record of community scores consistently above 90, this is one of the more compelling arguments for taking California white Rhône blends seriously.
