Quick Facts: ABV: 15.8%  |  Origin: Central Coast, California  |  Vintage: 2020  |  Winery: Sine Qua Non

Production & Heritage

Sine Qua Non is the vision of Austrian-born winemaker Manfred Krankl, whose estate in Ventura County has become one of California's most sought-after cult producers. The Distenta II Grenache is built from a precise blend of 77.9% Grenache, 9.4% Mourvèdre, 7.9% Syrah, 4.3% Petite Sirah, and 0.5% Viognier — all sourced from four estate vineyards: Eleven Confessions (40%), Cumulus (33%), The Third Twin (21%), and Molly Aïda (6%). Fermentation incorporated 29% whole clusters, predominantly from the Grenache component — a technique Krankl has increasingly embraced over the past decade — and the wine matured for approximately 23 months in 52% new French oak barrels.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: The bouquet unfolds slowly and rewards patience. Initial waves of wild berry jam and black raspberry give way to white pepper, violets, and garrigue, with deeper layers of burnt orange peel, coffee beans, and classy leather emerging over time.

Taste: The entry is deceptively light on its feet for a wine of this concentration, with juicy black raspberry and cassis fruit flooding the mid-palate alongside floral and citrus-tinged nuances. Full-bodied richness builds through spicy baking chocolate and black tea notes, yet the wine maintains a razor's edge of balance, buoyed by fireworks of fresh acidity and super-fine, gorgeously integrated tannins.

Finish: Long, silky, and texturally seamless, the finish carries echoes of dark fruit, violets, and subtle peppercorn. The tannin structure lingers with remarkable purity, leaving a lasting impression of depth without heaviness.

How to Drink Distenta II

This wine is best served neat in a large-bowled glass at cellar temperature (60–65°F), ideally with at least 60 to 90 minutes of decanting to allow its complex aromatics to fully unwind. Given its concentration and structure, the Distenta II is built for contemplative sipping rather than cocktail use. Pair it with food that can match its weight: braised lamb shoulder benefits from the wine's peppery spice; grilled bone-in ribeye stands up to the full-bodied tannin structure; and duck confit echoes the dark fruit and earthy undertones on the palate.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Distenta II taste like? Distenta II delivers concentrated black raspberry and cassis fruit layered with violets, white pepper, coffee, and spicy baking chocolate, all carried by a silky, full-bodied palate with remarkably fine tannins and vibrant acidity.

How does Distenta II compare to Saxum's Grenache-based blends? Both Sine Qua Non and Saxum produce highly allocated, critically acclaimed Rhône-style wines from California's Central Coast, but Distenta II tends toward greater textural refinement and aromatic complexity, while Saxum's Grenache bottlings often emphasize ripe fruit intensity and Paso Robles terroir character.

Is Distenta II good for cellaring? With a perfect 100-point score from Jeb Dunnuck and its structured tannin framework, Distenta II has exceptional aging potential and should continue to develop beautifully in bottle for well over a decade under proper storage conditions.

Where is Distenta II made? Distenta II is produced by Sine Qua Non, the estate winery founded by Manfred Krankl in Ventura County, California, using fruit exclusively from four estate vineyards located in California's Central Coast region.

What foods pair well with Distenta II? Braised lamb shank matches the wine's peppery spice and full body; grilled bone-in ribeye complements its tannic structure; duck confit mirrors its earthy dark-fruit character; aged Gruyère or Comté echoes the nutty oak tones; and roasted beet salad with goat cheese highlights the wine's floral and berry aromatics.

What sizes does Distenta II come in? Sine Qua Non Distenta II Grenache 2020 is available in the standard 750ml bottle format.

Is Distenta II worth the price? Distenta II positions firmly in the ultra-premium tier for California wine, but its perfect score from Jeb Dunnuck, 99-point rating from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, and extremely limited estate production provide strong justification for its secondary-market valuation among collectors.

Why Distenta II?

A perfect 100 points from Jeb Dunnuck is not awarded lightly, and Distenta II earned that distinction through a combination of estate-grown precision and Manfred Krankl's evolving winemaking philosophy — particularly his now-confident use of 29% whole-cluster fermentation on Grenache, a technique he openly avoided a decade ago. The convergence of fruit from all four Sine Qua Non estate vineyards in a single bottling creates a layered complexity that few California Grenache-based wines can match. Paired with 23 months of aging in majority new French oak, the result is a wine that balances power and finesse at a level that has placed this producer among the most collectible names in American winemaking.
