Quick Facts: ABV: 15.4%  |  Origin: California, USA  |  Red Blend  |  Winery: Orin Swift Cellars

Production & Heritage

Orin Swift Cellars was founded by Dave Phinney, the same winemaker behind iconic labels such as The Prisoner and Saldo. Abstract is built from over 100 individual lots sourced across California, with Grenache, Petite Sirah, and Syrah forming the backbone, supplemented by smaller proportions of Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel. Each varietal is fermented separately to preserve its individual character before the final blend is aged for seven months in French oak barrels, 30% of which are new. The separate fermentation and meticulous blending process allow Phinney to capture a wide spectrum of California's microclimates and grape-growing regions in a single bottle.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: The nose opens with bright, popping aromatics of juicy raspberries, cranberries, and pluots. Deeper layers reveal black plum, boysenberry, hints of Bing cherry, and a subtle thread of lavender.

Taste: On the palate, the aromatic fruit carries through seamlessly, joined by dark chocolate and concentrated blackberry. The wine is full-bodied and massive in scale yet remarkably smooth, with a hint of sweet cream adding richness at mid-palate.

Finish: Supple, drying tannins and a slight chalky texture bring the wine to a calming, measured close. The dark fruit and cocoa linger quietly without heaviness.

How to Drink Abstract

Given its 15.4% ABV and layered complexity, Abstract drinks best at cellar temperature (60–65°F) in a large-bowled glass that lets its aromatics open fully. It rewards patient sipping on its own, though a slight chill can tame the alcohol on warm evenings.

  • Red Wine Sangria: The ripe berry fruit and spice hold up against citrus and brandy, contributing body and depth.
  • Kalimotxo: The wine's boldness and residual sweetness balance the bitterness of cola in this simple Spanish classic.
  • Mulled Wine: Its concentrated dark fruit and chocolate undertones pair naturally with cinnamon, clove, and orange peel when warmed.

Best For

  • Introducing a curious drinker to premium California red blends
  • Pairing with a weekend barbecue featuring smoked meats
  • Gifting to a fan of Dave Phinney's other labels like The Prisoner
  • Building a side-by-side tasting of California multi-varietal reds

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Abstract taste like? Abstract delivers bold dark fruit—black plum, boysenberry, and blackberry—layered with dark chocolate and a touch of sweet cream, wrapped in smooth, supple tannins and a chalky finish.

How does Abstract compare to The Prisoner? Both wines are California red blends created by Dave Phinney, but Abstract draws more heavily on Grenache, Petite Sirah, and Syrah, while The Prisoner leads with Zinfandel; Abstract tends toward darker, more concentrated fruit with a slightly higher ABV.

Is Abstract good for sipping neat? Yes—its layered aromatics, smooth tannins, and long finish make it well suited to drinking on its own, especially when served slightly below room temperature to keep the 15.4% alcohol in balance.

Where is Abstract made? Abstract is produced by Orin Swift Cellars in California, drawing fruit from vineyards across the state to represent a broad cross-section of California's diverse growing regions and climates.

What foods pair well with Abstract? Smoked brisket or pulled pork complements the wine's dark fruit intensity. Aged cheddar or Gruyère mirrors its richness. Dark chocolate desserts echo its cocoa notes. Lamb chops with rosemary align with its herbal undertones. Mushroom risotto matches its earthy, full-bodied texture.

What sizes does Abstract come in? Abstract 2020 is widely available in the standard 750ml bottle.

Is Abstract worth the price? Abstract positions as a mid-premium California red blend; its 91-point Wine Advocate score, the pedigree of winemaker Dave Phinney, and the complexity derived from over 100 blended lots offer strong value relative to comparably rated Californian reds.

Why Abstract?

What separates the 2020 Abstract from typical California red blends is scale of sourcing—over 100 individual lots, each fermented independently, are distilled into a single bottling that reads as a snapshot of the state rather than a single vineyard or appellation. The 91-point Wine Advocate rating validates the quality of the result. Seven months in French oak (30% new) adds structure and polish without overwhelming the fruit, keeping the blend expressive rather than oak-dominated. For drinkers already familiar with Dave Phinney's work on The Prisoner, Abstract offers a different lens on his blending philosophy—darker in fruit profile, broader in varietal scope, and distinctly Californian in ambition.
