Quick Facts: ABV: 14.7%  |  Origin: Napa Valley, California  |  Vintage: 2021  |  Winery: Chappellet, Pritchard Hill

Production & Heritage

Chappellet was founded in 1967 by Donn and Molly Chappellet on Pritchard Hill, one of Napa Valley's most elevated and storied vineyard sites. Under the direction of winemaker Phillip Corallo-Titus, Mountain Cuvée is a proprietary blend of 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Petit Verdot, 14% Merlot, 12% Malbec, and 5% Cabernet Franc. The 2021 growing season began with one of the driest winters on record, producing exceptionally small berries and clusters with intense concentration; fruit was harvested between September 10 and October 18, 2021, and the wine was bottled in March 2023.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: The nose opens with concentrated red currant and boysenberry, followed by layers of cassis, roasted coffee, and dark chocolate. Savory undertones and sweet oak round out the bouquet, adding complexity to an already expressive profile.

Taste: The palate entry is rich and mouthcoating, delivering dark berries and ripe plum across the mid-palate. Barrel spice, fresh herbs — sage, thyme, a thread of cinnamon — and vanilla emerge as the wine develops, all framed by supple, well-integrated tannins. The texture is seamless, with luxurious layers that build toward a full-bodied peak.

Finish: The finish is long and polished, with lingering cassis, dark chocolate, and spiced oak. Tannins remain smooth throughout, leaving a savory herbal impression that invites another sip.

How to Drink Mountain Cuvée

Mountain Cuvée shows its best when served at 60–65°F in a large-bowled glass, giving the aromatics room to open. Decanting for 30 to 45 minutes helps the tannins soften and the herbal-spice layers integrate further. This is primarily a food wine and a sipping wine; it does not typically lend itself to cocktail applications. Pair it at the table rather than the bar.

Best For

  • Anchoring a dinner party built around grilled red meats
  • Gifting a Napa Valley wine enthusiast who appreciates mountain-grown fruit
  • Building a vertical collection of Chappellet vintages
  • Serving as a centerpiece wine for a Bordeaux-blend tasting

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Mountain Cuvée taste like? Chappellet Mountain Cuvée 2021 is a rich, full-bodied red dominated by dark berry fruit, cassis, and ripe plum, layered with roasted coffee, barrel spice, fresh herbs, and dark chocolate. Tannins are supple and well-integrated, giving the wine a seamless, luxurious texture.

How does Mountain Cuvée compare to other Napa Valley red blends? Mountain Cuvée distinguishes itself through its Pritchard Hill pedigree and a five-grape Bordeaux-style blend that emphasizes Cabernet Sauvignon at 54%, lending more structure and tannin complexity than many Napa red blends that lean toward softer, fruit-forward profiles. Its 2021 vintage benefited from drought-concentrated berries, resulting in an especially intense and layered wine.

Is Mountain Cuvée good for sipping neat? Mountain Cuvée is an excellent sipping wine, particularly after a brief decant to let the tannins relax and the herbal and spice notes fully emerge. Its seamless texture and balanced acidity make it rewarding on its own without food.

Where is Mountain Cuvée made? Mountain Cuvée is produced by Chappellet, located on Pritchard Hill in Napa Valley, California. The winery sits at high elevation in the eastern hills above the valley floor, a site known for producing concentrated, structured red wines.

What foods pair well with Mountain Cuvée? Grilled lamb chops complement the wine's herbal sage and thyme notes. Braised short ribs echo its dark fruit and barrel spice. Aged cheddar or Gruyère highlight the wine's tannic structure. Mushroom risotto plays off the savory, earthy undertones. Dark chocolate desserts mirror the roasted coffee and cocoa aromas in the finish.

What sizes does Mountain Cuvée come in? Chappellet Mountain Cuvée is widely available in the standard 750ml bottle.

Is Mountain Cuvée worth the price? Mountain Cuvée positions as a mid-premium Napa Valley red blend, offering mountain-grown fruit, a five-varietal composition, and the craftsmanship of a winery with over five decades of history on Pritchard Hill — strong value within its tier, especially given the 93-point score from Brix26 for this vintage.

Why Mountain Cuvée?

Chappellet has been farming Pritchard Hill since 1967, and Mountain Cuvée channels that high-elevation terroir into an accessible yet complex Bordeaux-style blend. The 2021 vintage stands out for its drought-driven concentration — one of the driest winters on record produced tiny berries with amplified flavor intensity, a quality reflected in the wine's dense fruit core and layered spice. Winemaker Phillip Corallo-Titus marshaled all five classic Bordeaux varieties into a seamless whole, bottling a wine that scored 93 points from Brix26. For drinkers seeking a structured, age-worthy Napa red blend with genuine mountain provenance, this vintage delivers with uncommon depth.
