Description

Drambuie Liqueur 750ML is a 40% ABV Scotch whisky-based liqueur blended with honey, herbs, and spices in a 750ml bottle. Winner of Gold at the 2023 International Spirits Challenge, this iconic Scottish liqueur also earned a remarkable 96–100 points from Wine Enthusiast — placing it among the highest-rated spirits in its category.

Quick Facts: ABV: 40%  |  Origin: Scotland  |  Style: Scotch Whisky-Based Herbal Liqueur  |  Owner: William Grant & Sons (since 2014)

Production & Heritage

Drambuie traces its legend to the Isle of Skye and an old recipe said to date back to the 18th century. The liqueur is built on a base of blended Scotch whisky — approximately two-thirds grain whisky to one-third malt whisky, with many of the component whiskies aged 15 to 17 years. Production is now handled at a William Grant & Sons facility near Glasgow, having transitioned from the Morrison Bowmore Distillers site in 2019. The herbal essence at the heart of Drambuie is blended in a locked room at the facility; the complete recipe is kept in a safe and known to only three people. The essence itself is so concentrated that a single drop in a 500ml sample blend reportedly overwhelms the liquid, making precise formulation extraordinarily delicate work.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Warm honey leads, followed by saffron, dried orange peel, and a subtle malty Scotch backbone. Deeper inspection reveals layers of clove and toasted almond beneath the sweetness.

Taste: The entry is silky and viscous, coating the palate with golden honey before zesty orange and anise emerge at mid-palate. As the sweetness recedes, fennel seed, nutmeg, and vanilla come forward alongside a lightly malty whisky bite that anchors the whole profile. Fruitcake and raisin notes develop toward the peak, adding welcome depth.

Finish: Long and rich, with lingering saffron, honeycomb sweetness, and a gentle Scotch maltiness that reminds you this is, at its core, an aged-whisky product. The herbal complexity holds well after each sip.

How to Drink Drambuie

Neat or over a single large ice cube is the most direct way to experience the full interplay of honey, saffron, and whisky. A small splash of water can open the herbal aromatics further. Beyond sipping, Drambuie is the essential ingredient in three classic cocktails:

  • Rusty Nail — Equal parts (or adjusted to taste) Drambuie and blended Scotch; the cocktail that made Drambuie famous, letting the honey-spice meld seamlessly with malt.
  • Bobby Burns — Scotch, sweet vermouth, and a barspoon of Drambuie; the liqueur's herbal sweetness rounds the vermouth and adds a honeyed finish.
  • Drambuie Sour — Drambuie shaken with fresh lemon juice and egg white; the citrus cuts the sweetness while the egg white highlights the silky texture.

Best For

  • After-dinner sipping in place of a traditional digestif
  • Gifting a Scotch whisky enthusiast something outside the usual bottle
  • Building a well-stocked home bar with classic cocktail staples
  • Introducing someone to whisky-based liqueurs through an established benchmark

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Drambuie taste like? Drambuie delivers a rich, honeyed sweetness balanced by saffron, anise, clove, and a malty Scotch whisky backbone. The overall impression is silky and complex, with orange zest and toasted almond adding nuance.

How does Drambuie compare to Glayva? Both are Scotch whisky-based liqueurs infused with herbs, spices, and honey, but Drambuie leans more heavily on saffron and honeycomb sweetness while Glayva tends toward a brighter citrus and tangerine character. Drambuie also uses a blend with many whiskies aged 15–17 years, which gives it a more pronounced malt presence.

Is Drambuie good for cocktails? Drambuie is essential for the Rusty Nail — one of the most iconic Scotch-based cocktails — and works well in sours, Highballs, and stirred drinks where its honeyed herbal character adds complexity without overwhelming other ingredients.

Where is Drambuie made? Drambuie is produced in Scotland at a William Grant & Sons facility near Glasgow. The brand has been owned by William Grant & Sons since 2014.

What foods pair well with Drambuie? Dark chocolate truffles complement the honey and spice beautifully. Blue cheese such as Stilton contrasts the sweetness with salt and funk. Sticky toffee pudding mirrors the caramel and dried-fruit notes. Smoked salmon plays off the underlying Scotch maltiness. Baklava shares its honey-and-nut flavor territory and makes a natural pairing.

What sizes does Drambuie come in? The standard and most widely available size is the 750ml bottle, which is the expression covered here.

Is Drambuie worth the price? Drambuie positions as a mid-premium liqueur, and the use of aged Scotch whisky (many components matured 15–17 years) gives it a depth that justifies its placement above most flavored liqueurs. Its Gold medals at the International Spirits Challenge and near-perfect Wine Enthusiast score reinforce its standing as a category benchmark.

Why Drambuie?

Few liqueurs can claim a whisky base this serious — a blend of grain and malt Scotch, much of it aged 15 to 17 years, treated with an herbal essence so potent it is measured in individual drops. That combination of genuine whisky quality and botanical complexity has earned Drambuie Gold at the 2023 International Spirits Challenge and a 96–100 score from Wine Enthusiast. In a category crowded with one-dimensional sweetness, Drambuie delivers layered, saffron-inflected depth that works equally well neat, on ice, or as the defining ingredient in a Rusty Nail. It remains the reference point against which all other Scotch whisky liqueurs are measured.
