Description

Berthier Coteaux du Giennois is a Loire Valley Sauvignon Blanc from France's Central Vineyards appellation, bottled at 12.5% ABV in a standard 750ml format. Produced from 30-year-old vines planted across silex, limestone, and clay soils, this white wine has drawn attention as a compelling alternative to neighboring Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé — Alice Berthier's 2021 Sauvignon Blanc from this appellation earned 93 points from Wine Enthusiast.

Quick Facts: ABV: 12.5%  |  Origin: Coteaux du Giennois, Loire Valley, France  |  Sauvignon Blanc  |  Producer: Berthier Family

Production & Heritage

The Berthier family — including Alice Berthier as well as Clément and Florian Berthier — has deep roots in the Coteaux du Giennois appellation, a small AOC in the eastern Loire Valley situated near the more famous Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé zones. The terroir draws from approximately 50% silex soil from the commune of Saint-Père, along with 30% limestone and 20% clay from the commune of Pougny, both in the heart of the Central Vineyards along the Loire River. Each plot is vinified separately to preserve site-specific character; fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks before the wine is transferred to barrel for approximately one year of aging prior to bottling.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: The nose opens with perfumed pear and white blossom, followed by a vibrant layer of forest floor and curious cedar hints. There is an underlying freshness that signals the silex soils beneath.

Taste: On entry, bright lemon citrus and green apple lead into a mid-palate of red apple, dried grass, and summer field herbs. Grapefruit emerges alongside an earthy limestone minerality that builds complexity through each sip. The acidity is precise, giving the wine structure without austerity.

Finish: The finish is long and mineral-driven, with lingering notes of limestone and dried herbs. A subtle saline quality persists, pulling you back for another taste.

How to Drink Berthier Giennois

This Sauvignon Blanc shows best lightly chilled to around 10–12°C (50–54°F), served in a standard white wine glass to concentrate the aromatic complexity. It is an excellent sipper on its own but also performs well at the table.

  • Spritz: The crisp acidity and citrus profile make it a natural base for a white wine spritz with sparkling water and a grapefruit twist.
  • Hugo Cocktail: Swap in this Giennois for prosecco alongside elderflower syrup and mint — its herbal undertone adds depth.
  • Kir: The classic Burgundian aperitif works beautifully here; a splash of crème de cassis complements the wine's bright acidity and mineral backbone.

Best For

  • Introducing a wine enthusiast to the lesser-known appellations of the Loire Valley
  • Summer gatherings where a refreshing, food-friendly white is essential
  • Gifting to someone who loves Sancerre but appreciates discovering new regions
  • Building out a French wine collection with an under-the-radar appellation

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Berthier Giennois taste like? It delivers bright lemon citrus, green apple, and grapefruit up front, with dried grass, summer herbs, and a distinctive earthy limestone minerality running through the palate and into a long finish.

How does Berthier Giennois compare to Sancerre? Coteaux du Giennois sits just upstream from Sancerre along the Loire and shares similar silex and limestone soils, producing Sauvignon Blanc with comparable mineral character and acidity. The key difference is accessibility — Giennois is frequently described as drinking like Sancerre at roughly half the price, making it a strong value alternative.

Is Berthier Giennois good for sipping on its own? Yes — the wine's layered aromatics, balanced acidity, and mineral-driven finish make it a satisfying standalone sipper, particularly when served lightly chilled.

Where is Berthier Giennois made? It is produced in the Coteaux du Giennois AOC in France's Loire Valley, specifically from vineyards in the communes of Saint-Père and Pougny within the Central Vineyards sub-region along the Loire River.

What foods pair well with Berthier Giennois? Fresh chèvre or Crottin de Chavignol — the Loire's famous goat cheese — mirrors the wine's minerality. Grilled white fish like sole or sea bass complements its citrus brightness. A classic salade niçoise echoes the herbal notes. Oysters and shellfish amplify the saline finish. Light vegetable tarts or quiche with fresh herbs also match well.

What sizes does Berthier Giennois come in? The standard release is a 750ml bottle, which is the most widely available format.

Is Berthier Giennois worth the price? It positions as a value-driven Loire Sauvignon Blanc, sitting well below Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé in price while delivering comparable terroir-driven complexity — a strong proposition for drinkers seeking quality over label recognition.

Why Berthier Giennois?

Coteaux du Giennois remains one of the Loire Valley's most overlooked appellations, and the Berthier family's expression makes a persuasive case for paying attention. The blend of silex, limestone, and clay soils across separately vinified plots creates a layered Sauvignon Blanc that punches above its price tier, with Alice Berthier's recent 93-point score from Wine Enthusiast validating the appellation's potential. In a market saturated with mass-produced Sauvignon Blanc, this is a terroir-driven wine with genuine sense of place — mineral, herbal, and distinctly Loire. For anyone who has grown weary of paying the Sancerre premium, this bottling from just up the river offers the same pedigree of soil and climate at a fraction of the cost.
