About Limoncello

Southern Italy's favorite after-dinner pour is bright yellow, intensely lemony and best served very cold.

Making limoncello is simple in principle. Lemon zest, with as little white pith as possible, steeps in high-proof neutral spirit until the oils and color move into the liquid. The infusion is strained and blended with sugar syrup, which brings it down to a sippable strength. The lemon oils give many bottles a slightly opaque look, which is normal.

On our shelf you'll find Pallini from a Roman family producer, Villa Massa from the Sorrento peninsula, Luxardo, Caravella and Lemonel. Caravella Orangecello shows the same method applied to orange.

Traditionally, limoncello goes straight from the freezer into small chilled glasses as a digestivo after a meal. It also mixes well. A Limoncello Spritz tops an ounce or two with prosecco and a little soda water over ice. A Limoncello Collins combines gin, limoncello, fresh lemon and soda for a tall, tart drink.
