Description

Domaine Gioulis Sofos White Blend is an organic Greek white wine blending Moschofilero and Chardonnay at 13% ABV in a 750ml bottle. Produced at one of Greece's first certified organic vineyards — and the only Greek winery holding NOP (USDA National Organic Program) certification — this Peloponnese bottling merges indigenous aromatic character with international structure.

Quick Facts: ABV: 13%  |  Origin: Peloponnese, Greece  |  Moschofilero & Chardonnay Blend  |  Winery: Domaine Gioulis

Production & Heritage

Domaine Gioulis is a family-run estate in the village of Klimenti, situated at 900 meters altitude in the Province of Corinth near the Nemea valley. Founded by brothers George and Konstantinos Gioulis, the estate achieved Greek DIO organic certification in the late 1990s, making it one of the pioneering organic vineyards in Greece. Now in its second generation with Dimitris and Ermioni, the winery vinifies each variety separately in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats after static sedimentation for clarification; blending occurs only after fermentation is complete. The wine sees no oak aging, preserving the aromatic purity of the Moschofilero and the bright acidity of the Chardonnay. Depending on vintage, the blend ratio has ranged from 80% Moschofilero and 20% Chardonnay to equal proportions of both varieties.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: The nose opens with delicate rosebud and white flower aromatics, hallmarks of the Moschofilero grape. Behind those floral top notes, ripe apricot, honey, and a whisper of white peppercorn emerge with time in the glass.

Taste: On entry, the palate is fresh and bright with crisp pear and white peach flavors. Mid-palate brings cantaloupe and lychee-like fruit with a silky, medium-bodied texture. The Chardonnay component contributes structure and a tangy backbone that keeps the wine balanced and dry despite its generous fruit.

Finish: The finish is medium in length, trailing off with citron zest, a touch of almond, and lingering lemon spritz. A subtle crispness carries through, leaving a clean and refreshing close.

How to Drink Sofos White Blend

Serve well chilled between 8–10°C (46–50°F) to highlight the aromatic complexity of the Moschofilero while maintaining the Chardonnay's acidity. This wine is at its best on its own as an aperitif or alongside lighter fare. For a Greek-inspired spritzer, combine with sparkling water, a lemon twist, and fresh herbs — the floral intensity holds up well to dilution. It also works in a classic White Wine Sangria, where its peach and melon fruit harmonizes with sliced stone fruit and citrus. For a simple White Wine Spritz in place of Pinot Grigio, the Sofos adds more aromatic interest than typical choices.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Sofos White Blend taste like? It delivers fresh pear, white peach, and cantaloupe flavors underpinned by floral aromatics from the Moschofilero grape and a crisp, tangy acidity from the Chardonnay, finishing dry with citrus and almond notes.

How does Sofos White Blend compare to Boutari Moschofilero? Both feature the aromatic Moschofilero grape from the Peloponnese, but the Sofos blends in Chardonnay for added body and structure, whereas the Boutari is a single-variety expression that leans more purely floral and lighter on the palate.

Is Sofos White Blend good for sipping on its own? Yes — its aromatic nose and balanced, dry profile make it a natural aperitif wine, particularly when served well chilled in warmer months.

Where is Sofos White Blend made? It is produced by Domaine Gioulis in the village of Klimenti at 900 meters altitude, located in the Province of Corinth on the Peloponnese peninsula in southern Greece, near the renowned Nemea valley.

What foods pair well with Sofos White Blend? Grilled shrimp or calamari complement its citrus and floral notes. Spanakopita and other savory phyllo dishes work well with the wine's crisp acidity. A Greek salad with feta mirrors its Mediterranean origins. Mild goat cheese highlights the aromatic Moschofilero character. Light chicken dishes with lemon-herb sauces match the wine's medium body without overwhelming it.

What sizes does Sofos White Blend come in? The standard bottling is 750ml.

Is Sofos White Blend worth the price? The Sofos positions as an accessible, entry-level expression within Domaine Gioulis's portfolio, offering certified organic production and a distinctive indigenous-international grape blend at a price point competitive with other quality Greek whites.

Why Sofos White Blend?

What separates this wine from the crowded field of affordable white blends is its certified organic pedigree — Domaine Gioulis is the only Greek winery holding NOP certification, a standard typically associated with wines marketed specifically to the U.S. organic sector. The high-altitude vineyard at 900 meters contributes natural acidity and aromatic concentration that lower-elevation sites in the Peloponnese cannot replicate. The decision to vinify each variety independently before blending gives the winemaker precise control over the balance between Moschofilero's floral exuberance and Chardonnay's structural backbone. For anyone looking beyond Assyrtiko as an entry point into Greek white wine, the Sofos offers a genuinely distinct flavor profile rooted in place and sustainable farming.
