Description
Description
Domaine Gioulis Sofos Red Blend is a 750ml, 13% ABV Greek red wine blending 80% Agiorgitiko with 20% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Peloponnese peninsula. Produced at one of Greece's first certified organic vineyards, this expression showcases high-altitude fruit from plots planted between 800 and 850 meters above sea level near the storied Nemea valley.
Quick Facts: ABV: 13% | Origin: Province of Corinth, Peloponnese, Greece | Style: Red Blend | Producer: Domaine Gioulis
Production & Heritage
Domaine Gioulis was founded in 1993 by George Gioulis, an agronomist-oenologist who studied at the University of Bordeaux. The estate is situated near Klimenti village in the Province of Corinth and holds the distinction of being the only Greek winery with NOP (National Organic Program) certification. The Sofos Red Blend undergoes traditional vinification with each variety fermented separately; the Cabernet Sauvignon component then spends six months aging in French oak casks before blending. The Agiorgitiko grapes come from a south-west-oriented vineyard at 800 meters altitude, while the Cabernet Sauvignon is grown on a northeast-facing slope at 850 meters — an elevation that contributes marked acidity and concentration to both varieties.
Tasting Notes
Aroma: The nose opens with ripe cherry and red forest fruits before shifting to discreet spicy notes and savory herbs. A secondary layer of dark berry and a faint floral quality from the Agiorgitiko round out the bouquet.
Taste: On the palate, fresh blackcurrant and blackberry fruit arrive immediately, joined at mid-palate by red pepper, hints of black chocolate, and subtle baking spice. The body sits at medium-plus, with well-balanced acidity keeping the fruit expressive rather than heavy.
Finish: The finish is medium in length with firm but mellow tannins that frame lingering dark fruit and a trace of spice. It closes cleanly, leaving a savory, slightly earthy impression.
How to Drink Sofos Red Blend
Serve at 16–18°C (61–64°F). A short decant of 20 to 30 minutes opens the aromatics and softens the tannins, though the wine is approachable enough to pour directly. For cocktails and mixed drinks: a Kalimotxo works well here because the structured tannins and bright acidity hold up against cola; a red wine Sangria benefits from the cherry and berry core plus the spice-driven complexity; and a New York Sour gains depth from the Agiorgitiko's dark fruit character layered over bourbon and citrus.
Best For
- Introducing friends to Greek wines beyond the usual Santorini whites
- Weeknight Mediterranean dinners where versatility matters
- Gifting wine lovers who appreciate organic and sustainably farmed bottles
- Building a Peloponnese-focused cellar alongside Nemea single-varietal Agiorgitiko
Frequently Asked Questions
What does Sofos Red Blend taste like? It delivers ripe cherry and blackcurrant fruit up front, followed by red pepper, black chocolate, and baking spice on a medium-plus body with firm yet mellow tannins. The high-altitude fruit contributes bright acidity that keeps the wine vibrant and food-friendly.
How does Sofos Red Blend compare to a single-varietal Nemea Agiorgitiko? Where a pure Nemea Agiorgitiko tends toward softer tannins and rounder red fruit, the 20% Cabernet Sauvignon in the Sofos blend adds structural grip, darker berry notes, and the dimension that comes from six months in French oak. The result is a slightly more Bordeaux-like profile with the aromatic lift characteristic of Greek highland fruit.
Is Sofos Red Blend good for sipping neat? Yes — its balanced acidity, medium-plus body, and layered fruit make it an enjoyable glass on its own, especially after a brief decant to let the aromatics open fully.
Where is Sofos Red Blend made? It is produced by Domaine Gioulis near Klimenti village in the Province of Corinth, Peloponnese, Greece, at vineyard elevations of 800 to 850 meters close to the renowned Nemea valley.
What foods pair well with Sofos Red Blend? Grilled lamb chops benefit from the wine's firm tannins and peppery spice. Moussaka mirrors the earthy, savory herbs in the mid-palate. Hard aged cheeses like Graviera complement the dark fruit and oak nuances. Roasted red pepper dishes echo the wine's own red pepper note. Dark chocolate desserts with moderate sweetness tie into the black chocolate hint on the finish.
What sizes does Sofos Red Blend come in? The standard size is 750ml, which is the widely available format for this wine.
Is Sofos Red Blend worth the price? It positions as an entry-to-mid-level expression within Greek red wines, but its certified organic farming, high-altitude fruit, French oak aging for the Cabernet component, and NOP certification deliver quality that punches above its price tier.
Why Sofos Red Blend?
Domaine Gioulis stands alone as the only Greek winery holding NOP organic certification, and the Sofos Red Blend is a direct expression of that commitment — fruit grown without synthetic inputs at elevations few Greek vineyards reach. The separate vinification and selective French oak aging of the Cabernet Sauvignon fraction adds a deliberate, Bordeaux-informed structure without masking the native personality of Agiorgitiko. For drinkers exploring Greek reds beyond the familiar Nemea label, this blend offers a credible bridge between the approachable fruit of the Peloponnese and the tannic architecture of a classic Cabernet-driven blend. It is a serious organic wine from a region that rarely gets the attention its altitude and terroir deserve.
