About Gold Rum

Sitting between crisp white rum and long-aged sipping rum, this middle category is a bar workhorse. It typically spends a short time in oak, and some producers adjust color with caramel for consistency, resulting in a smooth spirit with gentle sweetness and a hint of wood.

Flavor shifts with origin. Mount Gay Eclipse from Barbados is bright and lightly toasty, Appleton Estate Signature brings the fruit-forward funk of Jamaican rum, and Flor de Cana Gold 4 Year from Nicaragua is dry and clean. Bacardi Gold is a familiar, easygoing choice, and Brugal Anejo from the Dominican Republic leans drier than many Caribbean rums. Other names on the shelf include DonQ Gold, Chairman's Reserve and Tanduay Gold from the Philippines.

Gold rum is built for mixing. Rum Punch, with citrus, sugar, a little grenadine and fresh fruit juice, is a natural fit for a batch at a gathering. A Cuba Libre (rum, cola and fresh lime) picks up extra depth from gold rum compared with white. It also works with ginger beer or in a simple rum and pineapple over ice.

Gold Rum FAQ

What is gold rum?

Gold rum, sometimes called amber rum, is rum that has been aged briefly in oak barrels, giving it a golden color and soft notes of vanilla, caramel and toasted wood. It has more flavor than white rum but stays easy to mix. Bacardi Gold and Mount Gay Eclipse are classic examples.

What is the difference between gold rum and white rum?

White rum is either unaged or aged briefly and filtered to remove color, so it tastes light and clean. Gold rum keeps some barrel color and flavor, giving it more body and sweetness. Use white rum for a crisp Mojito, and pick a gold rum like Flor de Cana Gold 4 Year for a richer Cuba Libre.

What is the best gold rum for rum punch?

A flavorful, easy-mixing gold rum works best in punch because it stands up to fruit juice and citrus. Appleton Estate Signature Blend adds Jamaican fruitiness, while Bacardi Gold is mellow and crowd-pleasing. Both come in 1.75L bottles, which is convenient for making a large batch for guests.

Can you sip gold rum neat?

You can, though most gold rum is designed for mixing. Some bottles are pleasant on a large ice cube, including Brugal Anejo, which is dry and lightly oaky, and Havana Club Anejo Classico. For a true sipping experience with deeper barrel character, an older aged rum is a better choice.
