Description

Dry Creek Vineyard Chenin Blanc is a 100% Chenin Blanc white wine from California's Clarksburg AVA, bottled at 12% ABV in a standard 750ml format. The 2023 vintage earned the #24 spot on Wine Spectator's 2025 Top 100 list — a remarkable achievement for a varietal that rarely commands that level of critical attention in California.

Quick Facts: ABV: 12%  |  Origin: Clarksburg AVA, California  |  Varietal: 100% Chenin Blanc  |  Producer: Dry Creek Vineyard, Healdsburg, Sonoma County

Production & Heritage

Dry Creek Vineyard was founded by David Stare in 1972 in Sonoma County's Dry Creek Valley and has long championed Chenin Blanc as a serious California varietal. The fruit for this wine is sourced exclusively from Wilson Ranch in the Clarksburg AVA — a partnership spanning more than 40 years and the only exception the winery makes to sourcing grapes outside Sonoma County. Fermentation takes place entirely in stainless steel with no oak aging, a deliberate choice that preserves the grape's bright aromatics and natural acidity while highlighting the distinctive character of the Clarksburg terroir.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: The nose opens with fragrant honeydew and white peach, layered with jasmine and orange blossom. Subtle hints of honeysuckle and mango develop as the wine breathes.

Taste: The entry is crisp and immediate, with juicy peach and Meyer lemon taking the lead. Mid-palate, ripe apple and cucumber emerge alongside crushed mineral notes and a pleasing chalkiness. A graceful, slightly oily texture carries flavors of pineapple and white tea through to the peak.

Finish: Medium in length with lingering citrus zest, white pepper, and a clean mineral edge. The acidity stays lifted and refreshing without turning tart, leaving a dry and satisfying close.

How to Drink Dry Creek Chenin Blanc

This wine shines when served well chilled, between 45–50°F, and poured without ceremony into a standard white wine glass. It needs no decanting — the aromatics are generous straight from the bottle. A French 75 variation using this Chenin Blanc in place of Champagne brings stone fruit depth to the gin-and-lemon framework. A White Wine Spritzer with a splash of soda and a cucumber ribbon plays to the wine's natural freshness and melon notes. A Sangria Blanca built around this bottle benefits from its tropical fruit character and bright acidity, which holds structure against added sweetness.

Best For

  • Warm-weather porch drinking with friends who appreciate good wine at fair value
  • Pairing with a Southeast Asian or Vietnamese takeout spread
  • Introducing someone to Chenin Blanc as a standalone California varietal
  • Gifting a wine enthusiast something unexpected from a respected Sonoma producer

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Dry Creek Chenin Blanc taste like? It delivers ripe peach, Meyer lemon, and melon up front, supported by crushed mineral notes, white tea, and a touch of white pepper. The texture is graceful with a dry, crisp finish driven by vibrant acidity.

How does Dry Creek Chenin Blanc compare to Pine Ridge Chenin Blanc + Viognier? Pine Ridge blends roughly 80% Chenin Blanc with Viognier, also sourced from Clarksburg, which adds body and floral richness but softens the acidity. Dry Creek's 100% Chenin Blanc bottling is leaner, more mineral-driven, and lets the varietal speak for itself without a blending partner.

Is Dry Creek Chenin Blanc good for sipping on its own? Absolutely — the balance of fruit, acidity, and mineral texture makes it a compelling standalone sipper. Serve it chilled on a warm afternoon and it needs nothing else.

Where is Dry Creek Chenin Blanc made? Dry Creek Vineyard is located in Healdsburg, Sonoma County, California, though the Chenin Blanc grapes are sourced from Wilson Ranch in the Clarksburg AVA, a cooler region in the Sacramento River Delta known for producing vibrant white wines.

What foods pair well with Dry Creek Chenin Blanc? Thai green curry works well because the wine's acidity and fruit cut through coconut richness. Fresh goat cheese salads complement the mineral backbone. Grilled shrimp with citrus butter echoes the peach and lemon notes. Vietnamese summer rolls match the cucumber and melon character. Pan-seared halibut with herbs lets the wine's texture and acidity act as a palate cleanser.

What sizes does Dry Creek Chenin Blanc come in? The standard release is a 750ml bottle, which is the most widely available format.

Is Dry Creek Chenin Blanc worth the price? This wine positions as a strong value within the premium white wine category, delivering quality and critical recognition — including a Wine Spectator Top 100 ranking — that punches well above its price tier.

Why Dry Creek Chenin Blanc?

Chenin Blanc has been largely overlooked in California for decades, and Dry Creek Vineyard is one of very few producers who have kept faith with the grape — backed by a 40-plus-year relationship with a single grower in Clarksburg. That commitment has been validated at the highest level, with the 2023 vintage landing at #24 on Wine Spectator's 2025 Top 100 and previous vintages collecting more than 30 Gold Medals across major competitions. The stainless steel fermentation approach lets the Clarksburg terroir and varietal character remain front and center, producing a wine that is simultaneously refreshing and texturally interesting. In a market crowded with Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Grigio, this Chenin Blanc stands apart as something genuinely distinct.
