About Cognac & Brandy Orange

Here the orange is only half the story; the aged spirit underneath gives these liqueurs their amber color, body and long finish.

The method pairs a citrus distillate or infusion with cognac or other brandy, then sweetens and rests the blend. Grand Marnier combines bitter orange with cognac and offers several expressions, including the Cuvee du Centenaire and Louis Alexandre bottlings. Mandarine Napoleon uses mandarin rather than orange for a softer, more perfumed profile. Italy's Gran Gala and Spain's Torres Magdala build on brandy, while Mathilde Orange XO leans on older cognac. Cointreau Noir marries the familiar triple sec with cognac.

Because of the aged base, these bottles sip well on their own. Pour an ounce or two neat in a snifter, or over a single large cube, after dinner. In cocktails, a Cadillac Margarita uses Grand Marnier in place of, or floated over, standard orange liqueur. In the kitchen, cognac orange liqueur is the classic flambe for crepes Suzette.

Cognac & Brandy Orange FAQ

What is Grand Marnier made of?

Grand Marnier is made by blending cognac with a distillate of bitter orange peel, then sweetening the mix. The result is amber, rich and slightly oaky. The flagship Grand Marnier 750ML is the bottle most recipes mean, while the Centenaire and Louis Alexandre expressions put more emphasis on the aged cognac.

How do you drink Grand Marnier?

Grand Marnier works neat or over one large ice cube as an after-dinner drink, usually in a one to two ounce pour. It also shines in a Cadillac Margarita or a Grand Mimosa with orange juice and sparkling wine. A Grand Marnier 375ML bottle is an easy way to try it before committing to a full size.

Is cognac orange liqueur the same as triple sec?

No. Triple sec, such as Cointreau, is a clear orange liqueur on a neutral base. Cognac orange liqueurs like Grand Marnier add aged cognac or brandy, giving more body and oak character. You can use one where a recipe calls for triple sec, but expect a richer, rounder drink. Gran Gala Orange Liqueur offers a similar brandy-based style.

What is a Cadillac Margarita?

A Cadillac Margarita is a richer take on the classic, made with tequila, fresh lime and a cognac-based orange liqueur, often Grand Marnier, either shaken in or floated on top. The cognac adds depth that pairs well with aged tequila. Mandarine Napoleon makes a softer, mandarin-forward variation worth trying.
