About Cinnamon & Butterscotch Schnapps

Candy-shop flavors are the theme here: rich, buttery sweetness on one side and fiery cinnamon heat on the other. Both styles start with a neutral spirit that is sweetened and flavored, so they pour smooth and are built for shots, warm drinks and dessert cocktails.

On the butterscotch side, DeKuyper Buttershots is the familiar name, with notes of caramel and toffee. For cinnamon, DeKuyper Hot Damn delivers a bold red-hot candy flavor, and Goldschlager is the clear cinnamon schnapps famous for the flakes of gold leaf that swirl in the bottle. Dr. McGillicuddy's rounds out the shelf with Apple Pie and Raw Vanilla, two flavors that play well with either style.

Two serves to try. The Buttery Nipple layers butterscotch schnapps under Irish cream in a shot glass for a sweet, creamy sip. For a cold-weather mug, stir a shot of Hot Damn or Goldschlager into hot apple cider, or pair cinnamon schnapps with Apple Pie for a spiced apple shot.

Serve these chilled when pouring neat, and keep portions small, since the sweetness adds up quickly. Butterscotch schnapps can also be spooned over vanilla ice cream or splashed into coffee.

Cinnamon & Butterscotch Schnapps FAQ

What is butterscotch schnapps?

Butterscotch schnapps is a sweet liqueur flavored to taste like butterscotch candy, with notes of brown sugar, butter and caramel. It is usually lower in proof than straight spirits and very easy to sip. DeKuyper Buttershots is the best known example and the go-to bottle for a Buttery Nipple shot.

How do you make a Buttery Nipple shot?

Pour about half an ounce of butterscotch schnapps into a shot glass, then slowly layer an equal amount of Irish cream on top by pouring it over the back of a spoon. DeKuyper Buttershots is the standard choice. Some versions add a splash of vodka, but the two-ingredient version is the classic.

What is the difference between Goldschlager and Hot Damn?

Both are cinnamon schnapps with a sweet, spicy kick, but they look and pour differently. Goldschlager is clear, with flakes of gold leaf suspended in the bottle, and is a popular chilled shot. DeKuyper Hot Damn is bright red with a punchy red-hot candy flavor that works well stirred into warm apple cider.

What can you mix with cinnamon schnapps?

Cinnamon schnapps pairs naturally with apple, so try it in hot or cold apple cider, or combine it with Dr. McGillicuddy's Apple Pie for a spiced apple shot. It also works in hot chocolate and coffee. DeKuyper Hot Damn and Goldschlager are both easy to mix and are best served well chilled when poured neat.
