About Whiskey & Bourbon Cream

Where Irish cream leans on lighter Irish whiskey, this style uses bourbon, which by law ages in new charred oak containers, or another American whiskey, so oak, brown sugar and baking spice come through the cream. Some bottles stay simple and bourbon-forward, while others add dessert flavors such as banana pudding, peaches and cream or cookies and cream.

Serve it chilled on a big ice cube, stir it into coffee, or pour a shot over a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Two crowd favorites are the bourbon cream root beer float (bourbon cream, root beer, vanilla ice cream) and a spiked hot cocoa topped with whipped cream.

Buffalo Trace Bourbon Cream is a go-to for a straight, oak-and-vanilla style. Headframe Orphan Girl is a craft take on the same idea. Jackson Morgan Southern Cream comes in a long list of dessert flavors from Salted Caramel to Grasshopper Pie, and Ole Smoky offers Banana Pudding, Bourbon Ball and Mint Chocolate Chip. Brown Jug and Nooku round out the shelf.

Whiskey & Bourbon Cream FAQ

What is bourbon cream liqueur?

It is a cream liqueur built on bourbon or another American whiskey instead of Irish whiskey. The result tastes more like caramel, vanilla and toasted oak than a classic Irish cream. Buffalo Trace Cream is a good reference point, and Headframe Orphan Girl Bourbon Cream Liqueur offers a craft version of the same style.

How do you drink bourbon cream?

Most people pour it over ice or into coffee. It also makes a simple root beer float when you add a shot to root beer and vanilla ice cream. Flavored bottles like Jackson Morgan Brown Sugar & Cinnamon Southern Cream are good in hot cocoa or drizzled over bread pudding.

What is the best bourbon cream for dessert drinks?

If you want flavor built in, go with Jackson Morgan Peaches & Cream Southern Cream, Ole Smoky Banana Pudding Cream or Ole Smoky Cookies & Cream, which taste like the dessert on the label. For a plainer bourbon flavor you can mix your own way, Buffalo Trace Cream or Brown Jug Bourbon Cream are the better picks.
