The Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897 was created to protect drinkers from adulterated whiskey. To earn the label, a bourbon must be the product of a single distilling season, made by one distiller at a single distillery, aged at least four years in a federally bonded warehouse, and bottled at exactly 100 proof. The label must also name the distillery where it was made.

For drinkers, that adds up to a reliable formula: enough age for real oak character, enough proof for flavor to hold up neat or in a cocktail, and usually a fair price. Bottled in bond bourbons are some of the best values on the shelf and a favorite of bartenders for Old Fashioneds and Manhattans.
