Quick Facts: ABV: 6.5%  |  Origin: Suffolk, England  |  Style: English Cream Stout  |  Brewery: St. Peter's Brewery

Production & Heritage

St. Peter's Brewery was founded in 1996 by John Murphy in former agricultural buildings adjacent to the historic St. Peter's Hall in the village of St Peter, South Elmham, near Bungay in Suffolk. The Cream Stout is brewed with Fuggles and Challenger hops alongside a blend of local malts, using water naturally filtered through chalk drawn from the brewery's own deep bore-hole. The beer is packaged in St. Peter's signature oval flask-shaped bottle — a faithful reproduction of an original circa 1770 bottle produced for Thomas Gerrard of Gibbstown, New Jersey, the original of which is kept at St. Peter's Hall.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Filter coffee dominates the nose, joined by dark chocolate and a warm vanilla sweetness. Beneath those primary notes, a subtle spiciness and hints of toasted bread round out the aromatics.

Taste: The entry is rich and molasses-sweet, with dark chocolate and coffee layering across the mid-palate. A creamy, velvety mouthfeel carries berry fruitiness and cherry cola undertones before a definite bittersweet note emerges at the peak. The body is medium-to-full with gentle carbonation.

Finish: The finish is dry and satisfying, with lingering coffee bitterness and a touch of roasted malt. A faint alcohol warmth from the 6.5% ABV closes things out cleanly.

How to Drink St. Peter's Cream Stout

This stout is at its best poured into a tulip glass or nonic pint at cellar temperature — around 50–55°F — to let the full spectrum of malt character open up. For cocktail-curious drinkers, the Cream Stout also works well in these applications:

  • Stout Float: Poured over a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream, where the coffee and chocolate notes play directly off the dairy richness.
  • Black Velvet: A classic half-and-half with dry sparkling wine, where the stout's molasses sweetness contrasts beautifully with crisp acidity.
  • Espresso Stout Martini: Shaken with vodka, coffee liqueur, and a shot of cold espresso, this stout adds body and chocolate depth impossible to replicate with lighter beers.

Best For

  • A cold-weather evening session by the fire
  • Gifting to a craft beer enthusiast who appreciates traditional English styles
  • Pairing alongside a dessert course at a dinner party
  • Introducing someone to the depth and range of English stout beyond mainstream options

Frequently Asked Questions

What does St. Peter's Cream Stout taste like? It delivers a rich combination of dark chocolate, filter coffee, and vanilla with a smooth, creamy mouthfeel and a dry, bittersweet finish. Berry fruitiness and molasses sweetness add complexity beneath the primary roasted malt character.

How does St. Peter's Cream Stout compare to Guinness Draught? At 6.5% ABV, St. Peter's Cream Stout is considerably stronger and more full-bodied than Guinness Draught (4.2% ABV), with a more pronounced chocolate and coffee intensity. Guinness emphasizes dry roast and a lighter, nitrogen-smoothed body, while St. Peter's leans into richer malt sweetness and a drier, more complex finish.

Is St. Peter's Cream Stout good for sipping on its own? Absolutely — the layered malt profile and smooth mouthfeel make this a stout designed to be savored slowly. Pouring it into a proper glass at cellar temperature brings out the full range of coffee, vanilla, and chocolate.

Where is St. Peter's Cream Stout made? It is brewed at St. Peter's Brewery, located adjacent to the medieval St. Peter's Hall in the village of St Peter, South Elmham, in Suffolk, England. The brewery was founded in 1996 and remains independent.

What foods pair well with St. Peter's Cream Stout? Dark chocolate desserts amplify the stout's cocoa character. Smoked meats and barbecue complement the roasted malt backbone. Sharp aged cheddar provides a savory counterpoint to the beer's sweetness. Beef stew or braised short ribs echo its depth and richness. Coffee-rubbed steak creates a harmonious bridge to the coffee notes in the beer.

What sizes does St. Peter's Cream Stout come in? This listing is a four-pack of St. Peter's signature oval flask-shaped bottles, a distinctive format unique to the brewery and modeled on an 18th-century original.

Is St. Peter's Cream Stout worth the price? It positions as a premium English cream stout, priced above mass-market stouts but justified by its higher ABV, small-batch independent production, distinctive packaging, and consistent award-winning quality stretching over two decades.

Why St. Peter's Cream Stout?

Few English cream stouts carry the competitive record this one does — gold medals in consecutive years at the International Beer Competition, followed by continued recognition through a 2024 World Beer Awards Silver. The combination of Fuggles and Challenger hops with a multi-malt bill and chalk-filtered bore-hole water produces a stout with genuine depth rather than one-note roastiness. The iconic oval bottle connects the beer to a tangible piece of brewing history. With over 58,000 ratings on Untappd and a 3.6 average, it has proven its appeal well beyond Suffolk, earning a loyal following among drinkers who want a traditional English stout with real substance.
