About Arak

Arak is a clear anise spirit from the Levant, distilled from grapes and flavored with aniseed. It is the traditional drink of Lebanon and its neighbors, and it turns milky white the moment you add water.

How arak is made

Most arak starts as a grape spirit that is distilled again with aniseed, often several times, for a dry, clean anise flavor without the sweetness of many liqueurs. Many Lebanese producers rest it in clay jars before bottling. You will find it at two strengths: around 80 proof for easy drinking and 100 proof for a fuller, more intense pour.

How to drink arak

Arak is almost always mixed with cold water and served over ice, usually about one part arak to two parts water. Pour the arak, add the water, then the ice. The water releases the anise oils and turns the glass cloudy white. It is the classic partner for mezze: hummus, tabbouleh, grilled meats and fresh vegetables.

Arak, ouzo and raki

All three are anise spirits that turn white with water. Arak comes from the Levant and is usually grape based and dry. Ouzo is Greek and often a little sweeter. Raki is the Turkish version, such as Yeni Raki and Tekirdag. For a sweet Italian take on anise, try sambuca.

Arak FAQ

What is arak?

Arak is a clear anise spirit from the Levant, most closely tied to Lebanon. It is usually made from a grape spirit distilled with aniseed, which gives it a dry, licorice-like flavor.

How do you drink arak?

Mix it with cold water, about one part arak to two parts water, then add ice. Adding the water before the ice keeps the drink smooth. It is traditionally served with mezze.

Why does arak turn white?

The anise oils dissolve in alcohol but not in water. When you add water, the oils come out of solution and turn the drink milky white. Ouzo, raki and sambuca do the same.

What is the difference between arak and ouzo?

Both are anise spirits. Arak comes from the Levant and is usually grape based and dry, while ouzo is Greek and often a little sweeter. Turkish raki sits in between.

What proof is arak?

Most araks are bottled around 80 proof, and many producers also make a stronger 100 proof version. We carry both, including 100 proof bottlings from Askalon, Fakra and Haddad.

Do you ship arak?

Yes. We ship nationwide where state law allows, and most orders ship within 24 hours. An adult 21 or older must sign for the delivery. You can also order online for pickup at our Wheeling or Vernon Hills store. See our shipping policy for details.
