Description

Banfi Chianti Classico is a Sangiovese-based red wine from the Chianti Classico DOCG in Tuscany, Italy, in a 750ml bottle. Made by Banfi, one of the most recognized names in Tuscan wine, it offers the classic Chianti profile of bright cherry fruit, savory herbs and lively acidity, finished with the black rooster seal of the Chianti Classico consortium.

Quick Facts: Origin: Chianti Classico DOCG, Tuscany, Italy | Varietal: Sangiovese (minimum 80%) | Style: Dry Red Wine | Producer: Banfi

Production & Heritage

Banfi was founded in 1978 by the Italian-American Mariani family, who built Castello Banfi in Montalcino into one of the largest and most technically advanced estates in Tuscany and played a major role in bringing Brunello di Montalcino to American tables. Their Chianti Classico comes from the historic zone between Florence and Siena, where Sangiovese grows on hillside vineyards of galestro and alberese soils. Chianti Classico DOCG rules require at least 80% Sangiovese, and Banfi blends it with a small share of complementary red varieties in the traditional manner. The wine ferments in temperature-controlled stainless steel to keep the fruit fresh, then ages in oak casks before bottling. The result is a Chianti Classico in the approachable modern style: ripe but not heavy, with the acidity and dusty tannin that make Sangiovese such a natural partner for food.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Red cherry, dried cranberry and violet lead, with notes of tomato leaf, dried oregano and a hint of leather and sweet tobacco.

Taste: Medium-bodied and bright, with sour cherry and plum fruit framed by fresh acidity and fine, slightly dusty tannins. Savory herb and earth notes build on the mid-palate.

Finish: Medium length, dry and lightly spiced, with lingering cherry, balsamic and a touch of oak.

How to Drink Banfi Chianti Classico

Serve Banfi Chianti Classico slightly below room temperature, around 60 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit, in a medium red wine glass, and give it twenty minutes open to soften. It is a food wine first: pour it with Bistecca alla Fiorentina or any grilled steak, a Margherita pizza or tomato-sauced pasta, and a board of pecorino and salumi. It also drinks well on its own with a bowl of olives and is sturdy enough to open on a weeknight.

Best For

  • Weeknight pasta, pizza and red-sauce dishes
  • Steak night and grilled meats
  • An affordable, reliable Italian red for entertaining
  • Introducing a friend to Sangiovese and Chianti Classico

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Banfi Chianti Classico taste like? It tastes of bright red cherry and plum with dried herbs, violet, a touch of leather and lively acidity, finishing dry with fine dusty tannins. It is a medium-bodied, food-friendly Sangiovese.

How does Banfi Chianti Classico compare to Banfi Brunello di Montalcino? Brunello is 100% Sangiovese from Montalcino, aged far longer, and is fuller, more structured and more expensive. The Chianti Classico is lighter, fresher and ready to drink young, which makes it the better everyday bottle.

Is Banfi Chianti Classico good for cooking? Yes. Its acidity and cherry fruit make it ideal for ragu, braises and tomato sauces, and it is affordable enough to cook with and drink alongside the meal.

Where is Banfi Chianti Classico made? It is produced by Banfi from Sangiovese grown in the Chianti Classico zone between Florence and Siena in Tuscany, Italy, and bottled under the Chianti Classico DOCG.

What foods pair well with Banfi Chianti Classico? Grilled steak, roast chicken with rosemary, lasagna, pizza, wild boar ragu, aged pecorino and Parmigiano-Reggiano, and charcuterie are all classic matches for its acidity and savory fruit.

What sizes does Banfi Chianti Classico come in? This listing is the standard 750ml bottle.

Is Banfi Chianti Classico worth the price? It is one of the most dependable Chianti Classicos in its price range, offering genuine DOCG character from a major Tuscan house without the premium of single-vineyard or Riserva bottlings.

Why Banfi Chianti Classico?

Banfi Chianti Classico is a wine that does exactly what Chianti should: it brings cherry fruit, savory herbs and bright acidity to the table and makes almost any Italian meal taste better. The Mariani family built Banfi on consistency and modern winemaking, and that shows in a Chianti that is clean, balanced and ready to drink the day you buy it. For a weeknight pizza, a Sunday ragu or a case to keep on hand for guests, it is a reliable, well-priced choice from a producer that has earned its reputation.
