Single Barrel Picks

When evaluating single barrel picks, consider the selector's reputation, the distillery of origin, and the specific tasting notes associated with each barrel. Bourbon single barrel picks often showcase amplified caramel, vanilla, and oak characteristics, while rye single barrel selections tend to deliver bolder spice and herbal complexity. Age statements, proof levels, and warehouse location all influence the final profile, and higher-proof picks frequently offer greater depth and intensity for those who prefer a full-bodied pour.

What to look for in Single Barrel Picks:

• Proof and Barrel Strength: Many premium single barrel picks are bottled at cask strength, delivering unfiltered flavor exactly as it matured in the barrel.
• Distillery and Mash Bill: The base recipe and production methods of the source distillery define the foundational flavor profile of every pick.
• Age and Warehouse Placement: Barrels aged longer or stored in prime warehouse positions, such as upper rickhouse floors, often develop richer, more concentrated flavors.
• Selector Expertise: The palate and intention behind the selection process directly impact quality, making the choosing party's track record an important consideration.

Single barrel picks span a wide range of styles, from wheated bourbon barrels with soft, dessert-like sweetness to high-rye selections bursting with pepper and dried fruit.
